La experta estadounidense subrayó pese a ello que «puede bajarse la transmisión» no sólo con vacunas sino también con otras herramientas ya antes disponibles, como el mantenimiento de distancias, las mascarillas, la higiene de manos o la no asistencia a grandes acontecimientos de masas.
«Tenemos a mano las armas para salvar vidas y reducir la transmisión», afirmó Van Kerkhove, quien aseguró que «cuanto más las usemos, más cerca estaremos de poner fin a la pandemia».
Los casos globales de COVID-19 aumentaron un 4 % la semana pasada después de casi dos meses de descensos, debido principalmente a las nuevas oleadas de contagios en países europeos como Reino Unido, Rusia, Turquía o Ucrania.
La OMS reportó 2,9 millones de contagios entre el 18 y el 24 de octubre, de los que más de la mitad, 1,6 millones, se registraron en Europa.
