La criptomoneda Omicron conoce una actividad frenética desde que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) decidió dar ese mismo nombre a la nueva variante del coronavirus responsable del COVID-19.
Hasta ahora, esta moneda digital era casi desconocida y presentaba un precio estable. Pero este lunes Omicron alcanzó un máximo de casi 700 dólares, unas diez veces más que dos días antes, según el sitio especializado CoinMarketCap.
El nombre elegido el viernes por la OMS para calificar la nueva variante detectada en Sudáfrica disparó el valor de esta divisa virtual, creada a inicios de noviembre.
La OMS decidió nombrar las variantes utilizando letras del alfabeto griego (alfa, beta, gamma, delta…) para evitar estigmatizar a ningún país en particular y facilitar al público la pronunciación de los nombres.
En su página web, los fundadores de la criptomoneda Omicron no hacen ninguna referencia al COVID-19. Más bien explican que esperan que su activo «podrá funcionar como una moneda capaz de conservar su poder adquisitivo independientemente de la volatilidad del mercado».
El lunes, el valor de Omicron retrocedió hasta 152 dólares antes de recuperarse y estabilizarse en 350 dólares hacia las 16h00 GMT, cinco veces más que a finales de la semana pasada.
