La altamente transmisible variante Delta del coronavirus se puede estar difundiendo entre las personas completamente vacunadas casi tanto como entre las que no han recibido ninguna dosis, según un reporte de las autoridades sanitarias de EEUU.
Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) de EEUU señalaron que las personas vacunadas portan tanto virus en la nariz como las personas no vacunadas y, por ello, las primeras podrían contagiarse el virus entre sí.
La agencia elaboró un reporte con base en el análisis de un brote de COVID-19 ocurrido a comienzos de julio, es decir cuando Estados Unidos celebra su fiesta nacional (4 de julio), en la pequeña comunidad de Provincetown, en Massachusetts, en donde las tres cuartas partes de los contagios correspondieron a personas completamente vacunadas.
Contagios sin muertes
El brote ocurrido en Massachusetts, estado donde la tasa de vacunación es del 69 %, estuvo relacionado con una serie de «eventos veraniegos» y grandes reuniones de personas en bares, restaurantes y discotecas, y dio como resultado 469 casos.
De ese total, 346 se registraron en personas completamente vacunadas, es decir con las dos dosis de Pfizer o Moderna o la monodosis de Johnson & Johnson, y al mismo tiempo 274 casos presentaron síntomas de la enfermedad.
Cinco personas que contrajeron el virus a causa de este brote, de las cuales cuatro estaban completamente vacunadas, debieron ser hospitalizadas pero no se reportó ninguna muerte, según los CDC.
«La vacunación es la estrategia más importante para prevenir enfermedades graves y la muerte», recalcó la agencia en este reporte, que lo difunde luego de recomendar esta semana que la gente vacunada vuelva a portar mascarillas en interiores y lugares públicos en casi todo el país.

La agencia señaló en su reporte que los hallazgos de la investigación «sugieren que incluso las jurisdicciones sin transmisión de COVID-19 sustancial o alta podrían considerar expandir las estrategias de prevención», tales como el uso de máscaras en entornos públicos cerrados al margen del estado de vacunación.
«Este hallazgo es preocupante y fue un descubrimiento fundamental que llevó a la actualización de la recomendación para el uso de máscaras de los CDC», dijo la directora de esta agencia, Rochelle Walensky.
«La recomendación sobre el uso de máscaras se actualizó para garantizar que el público vacunado no transmita el virus a otras personas sin saberlo, incluidos a sus seres queridos no vacunados o inmunocomprometidos (con enfermedades preexistentes)», añadió.
Un informe interno de esta agencia obtenido por el diario The Washington Post reveló que la variante delta de la COVID-19 puede causar una enfermedad más grave y es tan contagiosa como la varicela.

Estados Unidos registra un aumento de casos de coronavirus, con una media esta semana de 71.000 nuevos casos diarios de COVID, lo que ha llevado al Gobierno a impulsar la campaña de vacunación, que se ha ralentizado notablemente en los últimos dos meses, con apenas 49 % de la población inoculada con la pauta completa.
El presidente de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, anunció este jueves que obligará a más de 4 millones de trabajadores federales a demostrar que están vacunados si no quieren someterse a pruebas de COVID-19 regularmente.
