En 1997, cuando Kate Winslet protagonizó Titanic como Rose Dewitt Butaker, la niña rica que se enamora de Leonardo DiCaprio, todo indicaba que la actriz británica se convertiría en una estrella de taquilla. Sin embargo, ella no se dejó arrastrar por la expectativa del éxito y, literalmente, hundió hasta el fondo esa idea de convertirse en un fenómeno cinematográfico típico.
Luego de Titanic se le abrieron de par en par las puertas de Hollywood, pero Winslet se lo tomó con calma y escogió varias propuestas arriesgadas y con un espíritu más independiente.
Un año después de Titanic protagonizó Hideous Kinky, la historia de una joven que escapa con sus hijos a Marruecos y trata de abrirse paso en una cultura diferente.
Luego trabajó con Jane Campion en Holy Smoke, otro viaje en el que se dejaba seducir por un extraño gurú interpretado por Harvey Keitel. Allí se convirtió en la adoración de los fanáticos del desamor en la inclasificable comedia romántica Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Esos son solo algunos ejemplos de la extensa carrera, que inició con Titanic, de la estrella de cine, y ahora de la televisión, con otro brillo, Kate Winslet. Una mujer atrevida que ha sido capaz de criticar recientemente a Hollywood como un lugar cargado de prejuicios y homofobia.
Ella sigue en lo suyo, buscando papeles interesantes, y ya encontró uno en la televisión. Ya había protagonizado la miniserie Mildred Pierce y fue nominada al Globo de Oro por su trabajo como una madre soltera que trata de ganarse el amor de su hija a cualquier precio. Tampoco tuvo problemas en ser parte del proyecto televisivo de animación con Moominvalley. Y ahora es una mujer vulnerable y compleja en la miniserie Mare of Easttown.
Se trata de un show policíaco en el que interpreta a una detective que debe resolver un asesinato en una pequeña comunidad, como siempre, llena de secretos y relaciones complejas. La producción, de siete episodios, se estrena este domingo por HBO, a las 9.00 de la noche.
Un nuevo reto
“Creo que me enviaron los guiones en el 2018, lo leí y me encantó, en serio. Mare Sheehan fue uno de los mayores retos que creo que he tenido que afrontar”, agregó Winslet.
“Ella no se parece en nada a mí. Así que eso es bastante aterrador si eres una actriz como yo, que le gusta ser aterrorizada y no teme estar expuesta”, bromeó.
Pero la trama es un poco más densa. En Mare of Easttown, las cosas se complican cuando aparece asesinada una adolescente que le ha dejado a su exnovio la crianza de su pequeño hijo. Mare se encargará de encontrar al culpable, pero a la vez tendrá un conflicto muy profundo y se revelarán algunas cosas de su vida que la pondrán varias veces contra la pared. Está divorciada y lidia con una pérdida, y eso afecta su desempeño dentro de la investigación.
“Llegó en el momento perfecto en muchos sentidos para mí, cuando buscaba algo que me consumiera tanto como esto, y ciertamente lo hizo. Así que es verdad, me siento muy afortunada de que sea ahora una realidad”, reflexionó la intérprete de 45 años que no esconde su emoción.
Es duro ser detective
Sobre la profesión de detective reveló: “Creo que sería una pésima detective en la vida real. Me va mejor con las cervezas en una salida. Este personaje lo sentía a un millón de kilómetros de lo que soy yo. No creo que tenga la resistencia mental que se requiere. Tengo resistencia, pero de una manera diferente. Pero creo que la única cosa que siento que tengo en común con Mare y en la que honestamente pude apoyarme mucho fue en ese verdadero sentido de la familia y lo mucho que significa para ella mantenerla unida a toda costa”.
Y continúa: “Al igual que la capacidad de admitir que ha fallado, trata desesperadamente de corregir esos errores y de mantener a todo el mundo tan cerca de ella como pueda”.
Para preparar el papel, Winslet siguió la rutina de trabajo de un grupo de policías reales en Marple, al norte de Pensilvania. También tuvo como asesora y consejera a la detective Christine Bleiler y no quiso ver series policíacas, según publica El Tiempo de Colombia.
“Fue un verdadero dilema para mí. Al no conocer este mundo en absoluto, bueno, ¿dónde puedes encontrar esas cosas? Programas de televisión. Pero lo que sí hice fue ver muchos dramas de crímenes reales y muchas imágenes de YouTube”, detalló.
No obstante, su experiencia y años de trabajo, la actriz reconoce que siempre afronta sus nuevos proyectos con una carga de miedo y tensión.
“Diré que sí a un proyecto y luego pasaré todo el tiempo, desde que he dicho que sí hasta el rodaje, diciéndome a mí misma que no puedo hacer este papel. ¿Por qué dije que sí? ¿Por qué me lo pidieron? Quiero decir que los actores son así de raros, y yo no soy una excepción”, comentó.
Y agregó: “Paso por este extraño proceso de cuestionamiento, y luego la presión golpea y realmente está sucediendo. Y entonces no puedo pensar en nada más y afronto el temor haciendo el trabajo. No importa el tiempo que lleve en este negocio, nunca puedes dormirte en los laureles. Ahora
Mare of Easttown me lo hizo entender. Cuando se trata de la televisión, vas directamente a la casa de alguien y lo entretienes en su salón. Tienes que honrar ese lugar y tienes que cumplir y superar el miedo”.
