El profesor titular del Instituto de Medicina Tropical de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), Julio Castro, aseguró durante un conversatorio en línea con el periodista Andrés Cañizález, que fue una necedad por parte del gobierno de Nicolás Maduro el negar el ingreso de la vacuna AstraZeneca al país.
“Nicolás Maduro decidió, por un tema de política pública, tomar el mecanismo número dos por la necedad de no traer la vacuna AstraZeneca”, indicó el médico Internista e Infectólogo, y agregó al respecto que “no hay ninguna razón científica para no traer esa vacuna”.
Según Castro, 11 millones de vacunas es algo que no podemos despreciar en este momento y, a su entender, regresar el dinero a Venezuela no tiene sentido.
Venezuela se encontraba (hasta mayo de 2021), junto con 140 países más, en el proceso de pagar los 18 millones de dólares de costo al mecanismo COVAX; de ahí en adelante –comentó- se empezaba a pagar dependiendo de la cantidad de vacunas que enviarían. Esta modalidad está prevista para países de medianos ingresos.
El otro mecanismo de COVAX, explicó el doctor Castro, es para los países de mayor capacidad de pago, con la diferencia de escoger lo que te enviarán, siempre y cuando existiera disponibilidad, según publica La Patilla.
De igual manera, según precisó el académico, COVAX tiene un módulo para los países pobres, es decir, a aquellas naciones que no tienen capacidad de pago y les envían vacunas progresivamente, sin pagar.
Para el médico especialista en infectología, Venezuela pudo entrar en este esquema, sin embargo, al no cumplir con el envío de los datos el Banco Mundial no nos recalifica, perdiendo así la oportunidad de obtener este beneficio.
