Los máximos jefes de las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos y otros once países de Europa, Asia, Norteamérica y Oceanía condenaron este sábado la última matanza de civiles cometida por los militares de Birmania, y denunciaron que el Ejército de ese país “perdió la credibilidad”.
En un comunicado extraordinario, los comandantes militares de mayor rango de Estados Unidos, Canadá, el Reino Unido, Alemania, Italia, Grecia, Dinamarca, los Países Bajos, Japón, Corea del Sur, Australia y Nueva Zelanda se refirieron a la situación en Birmania (Myanmar).
“Como jefes de Defensa, condenamos el uso de la fuerza letal contra personas no armadas por parte de las fuerzas armadas birmanas y cuerpos asociados de seguridad”, indica la nota, difundida por el Pentágono.
“Unos militares profesionales deben seguir los estándares internacionales de conducta y son responsables de proteger -no dañar- al pueblo al que sirven”, continuaron.
Los líderes castrenses instaron a las Fuerzas Armadas birmanas a “detener la violencia y trabajar para restablecer el respeto y credibilidad para con el pueblo de Myanmar que perdieron a través de sus acciones”.
El breve comunicado es muy poco habitual por parte de los jefes militares de esos países, que suelen dejar este tipo de pronunciamientos en manos de los diplomáticos y titulares de la cartera de Exteriores, detalla EFE.
Su nota llegó al final de una jornada de represión, la de este sábado, que fue la más sangrienta desde que arrancaron las protestas en Birmania contra el golpe de Estado del pasado 1 de febrero.
Según el recuento del medio Myanmar Now, que cifra en al menos 116 las víctimas mortales de hoy, las muertes ocurrieron durante las manifestaciones convocadas en unas cuarenta ciudades de regiones y estados como Rangún, Mandalay, Sagaing, Bago, Magwe, Tanintharyi y Kachin.
La represión tuvo lugar mientras el Ejército celebraba con un desfile en la capital el Día de las Fuerzas Armadas, que grupos de manifestantes llamaron a convertir en “día contra la dictadura militar”.
La cifra total de víctimas mortales desde la asonada del 1 de febrero, que el viernes ascendía al menos a 328, supera ya las 400.
António Guterres, secretario general de la ONU, también condenó este sábado lo ocurrido en Birmania, y exigió una “respuesta internacional firme, unida y decidida”.
En un sentido similar se pronunció el secretario de Estado de Estados Unidos, Antony Blinken, quien rechazó el “reinado de terror” de los militares que han tomado las riendas del país asiático.
Estados Unidos sancionó en febrero al comandante del Ejército de Birmania, el general Min Aung Hlaing, quien lideró el levantamiento militar que llevó a la deposición del Gobierno electo de Aung San Suu Kyi, así como a otros nueve oficiales y a varias empresas vinculadas con las Fuerzas Armadas de ese país.
