Jamaica y partes de la República Dominicana se encuentran este jueves bajo vigilancia de tormenta tropical por el avance de Elsa por aguas del Caribe, un sistema que podría experimentar un «fortalecimiento adicional» en las próximas 48 horas, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC, por sus siglas en inglés) de EEUU.
Elsa, la quinta tormenta tropical del año en la cuenca atlántica, se mueve rápidamente hacia las Antillas Menores y se encuentra a unas 345 millas (560 km) al este-sureste de Barbados y a unas 460 millas (735 km) al este-sureste de San Vicente, indicó el NHC en su boletín de las 20.00 horas (00.00 GMT).
Se ha emitido una vigilancia de tormenta tropical (paso en 36 horas) para la costa sur de la República Dominicana, desde la frontera con Haití hasta Punta Palenque, y para Jamaica.
Permanece un aviso de tormenta tropical para Barbados, Martinica, Santa Lucía y San Vicente y las Granadinas.
El sistema se mueve hacia el oeste noroeste, presenta vientos máximos sostenidos de 45 millas por hora (75 km/h) y se desplaza rápidamente a una velocidad de 28 millas por hora (44 km/h).
Según las proyecciones del NHC, Elsa pasará el viernes cerca o sobre porciones de las islas de Barlovento o por el sur de las islas de Sotavento (las meridionales de las Antillas Menores), para luego avanzar hacia el este del mar Caribe y el sábado situarse cerca de la costa sur de La Española (República Dominicana y Haití).
A primera hora del domingo, la tormenta se moverá cerca de partes del este de Cuba, apuntaron los meteorólogos/EFE
