El Consejo de Ministros de Italia decidió este miércoles que Roma despedirá el viernes con un funeral de Estado al presidente del Parlamento Europeo, David Sassoli, quien falleció a los 65 años, tras permanecer ingresado durante más de dos semanas.
«El Consejo de Ministros, a propuesta del primer ministro, Mario Draghi, aprobó la celebración del funeral del presidente del Parlamento Europeo, David Maria Sassoli, en forma de funeral de Estado», explicó la Jefatura del Gobierno en un comunicado.
Sassoli falleció en la madrugada del martes en el hospital italiano de Aviano (Friuli Venezia Giulia, norte), donde llevaba ingresado desde el pasado 26 de diciembre por una complicación grave en su sistema inmunitario pese a que esto no se hizo público hasta este mismo lunes, horas antes de su muerte.
Para este jueves, será instalada una capilla ardiente en la sede del Ayuntamiento de Roma para que todo el que quiera se acerque para despedirse.
El funeral tendrá lugar el viernes a las 12.00 horas locales (11.00 GMT) en la Basílica de Santa María de los Ángeles y los Mártires, cerca de la romana Plaza de la República.
Está previsto que asistan a la misa el presidente de la República de Italia, Sergio Mattarella, el primer ministro, Mario Draghi, y también la presidenta de la Comisión Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, y el del Consejo Europeo, Charles Michel, entre otros.
