El ojo del “extremadamente peligroso” huracán Ida tocó tierra este domingo en Luisiana (EEUU) con vientos máximos sostenidos de unas 150 millas por hora (240 km/h) y ráfagas todavía más intensas, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC).
En un boletín especial, el NHC indicó que Ida impactó como huracán de categoría 4 en la escala Saffir-Simpson (de un máximo de 5), cerca de Port Fourchon, situado unas 50 millas (80 km) al suroeste de Nueva Orleans, ciudad que teme pueda revivir la tragedia causada hace hoy justo 16 años por el huracán Katrina, en la que murieron más de 1.800 personas, reseñó EFE.
No en vano, los meteorólogos ya han advertido de que Ida puede causar una marejada y vientos huracanados “catastróficos” en la zona costera de Luisiana.
El ojo del huracán entró a EEUU cerca de Port Fourchon, donde tienen su base terrestre 250 empresas del sector petrolero y que representa cerca del 18 % del suministro del petróleo del país, según datos de la Cámara de Comercio local.
Eso supone que las bandas exteriores y la pared norte del ojo, la más peligrosa del huracán pues contiene los vientos más intensos, ya está sobre la zona costera de Luisiana.
Ida se desplaza a 13 millas por hora (20 km/h) y lo hace en dirección noroeste, lo que llevaría al centro del huracán a pasar en las próximas horas por encima o muy cerca de la ciudad de Baton Rouge, capital y segunda ciudad más poblada del estado, por detrás de Nueva Orleans, con cerca de 220.000 habitantes.
Además de los poderosos vientos, capaces de destruir las casas que se encuentre a su paso el ojo del huracán, las autoridades están especialmente preocupadas por las inundaciones que pueden dejar la combinación del aumento del nivel del mar causado por la marejada ciclónica, el fuerte oleaje y las intensas lluvias previstas.
Fue el agua la que precisamente causó la gran mayoría de las muertes en 2005, cuando el huracán Katrina impactó sobre Nueva Orleans el 29 de agosto al romperse los diques de contención que protegían la ciudad del cercano lago Pontchartrain.
El gobernador de Luisiana, John Bel Edwards, reconoció este domingo en entrevista con CNN que Ida supondrá una “prueba muy seria” para el sistemas de diques, en los que se han registrado millonarias inversiones desde 2005.
En el caso de Ida, los meteorólogos anticipan una acumulación de lluvia de hasta 24 pulgadas (60 centímetros) y un aumento del nivel del mar de hasta 16 pies (4,8 metros).
Tras cruzar de sur a norte el estado de Luisiana, Ida se adentraría en Misisipi ya convertido en una tormenta tropical y vientos de unas 60 millas por hora (100 km/h).
