Honduras inicia mañana jueves un período inédito en su historia política con la llegada al poder de Xiomara Castro, la primera mujer presidenta de este país, quien obtuvo una rotunda victoria en las elecciones celebradas en noviembre con la promesa de sacar adelante a un país azotado por la pobreza, la corrupción, el crimen organizado y el drama de la emigración.
Castro, esposa del expresidente hondureño Manuel Zelaya, quien fue derrocado el 28 de junio de 2009, además llega al poder bajo la bandera del Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre, izquierda).
Con su investidura está llegando al final un bipartidismo tradicional, de más de un siglo, marcado por los conservadores partidos Nacional, que ha ejercido durante los últimos doce años, y el Liberal, que desde 2013 fue relegado a segunda fuerza de oposición en el Parlamento.
Castro ha creado muchas expectativas en su país por sus promesas de combatir con fuerza la corrupción, el narcotráfico, la pobreza, el desempleo, la criminalidad y mejorar los deficientes sistemas de salud y educación que tiene su país, además golpeado desde 2020 por la pandemia de la COVID-19, que ha dejado más de 10 mil muertos, y los daños que dejaron las tormentas tropicales Eta e Iota.

Además, ha prometido empeñarse para que cese la emigración de sus compatriotas que, según diversas fuentes, entre 500 y 600 salen a diario del país con la idea de llegar de manera ilegal a Estados Unidos, por la falta de empleo o la inseguridad.
Los desafíos son grandes para la nueva presidenta, en un país donde la pobreza estaría afectando a más del 70 % de sus 9,5 millones de habitantes, según diversas fuentes.
«Así como la victoria de Xiomara Castro fue muy grande, con más de 1,7 millones de votos, así son lo retos que tendrá como presidenta considerando la situación actual en que se encuentra el país», dijo a Efe la diputada saliente Doris Gutiérrez, quien será a partir de mañana una de los tres vicepresidentes que tendrá la nueva mandataria de los hondureños.
Agregó que «lo más gratificante para nosotras las mujeres, es que Xiomara logró conjuntar a la colectividad hondureña con una victoria sin precedentes en la historia política del país».
Gutiérrez cerrará mañana una carrera de 20 años como diputada ante el Parlamento, donde representó a dos partidos políticos y en un período ejerció como independiente, a lo que suma otro como concejal de la Alcaldía de Tegucigalpa.
La llegada de Castro al poder también supone el fin de la crisis política que Honduras vive desde el 28 de junio de 2009, cuando fue derrocado Manuel Zalaya, que se agudizó luego de las elecciones generales de noviembre de 2017, cuando el presidente saliente, Juan Orlando Hernández, fue reelegido, violentando la Constitución, que no permite la reelección bajo ninguna modalidad.
Además, según las principales fuerzas de oposición, Hernández ganó esos comicios mediante un «fraude».
Hernández buscó la reelección amparado en una interpretación a la ley que hizo el poder judicial, cuyos nuevos magistrados vacarán hasta en 2023, lo mismo que el actual fiscal general del Estado, Óscar Chinchilla, entre otros altos funcionarios.
