Microplásticos se han encontrado en lugares recónditos del planeta, como el Círculo Polar Ártico o el Everest, pero también en el estómago de tiburones o pingüinos y en heces humanas y placenta. Ahora, un estudio demuestra por primera vez que también pueden hallarse en el torrente sanguíneo de personas.
Las responsables de este trabajo son las investigadoras Heather Leslie y Marja Lamoree, de la Universidad Libre de Ámsterdam (Vrije Universiteit), quienes constatan que minúsculos trozos de plástico provenientes de nuestro entorno vital pueden ser absorbidos por el torrente sanguíneo humano.
Los resultados forman parte del proyecto Immunoplast y se publican en la revista científica Environment International.
Para llegar a sus conclusiones, el equipo investigador desarrolló un método analítico para establecer el nivel de trazas de partículas micro y nanoplásticas en la sangre humana.
El método se aplicó a la sangre de 22 donantes anónimos y se examinó para detectar la presencia de cinco polímeros diferentes, los componentes básicos del plástico. También se determinó el grado de presencia de cada uno de los polímeros en la sangre.
Según el análisis, tres cuartas partes de los sujetos analizados parecían tener plásticos en la sangre, señala la universidad en un comunicado: esta investigación -asegura- es la primera en demostrar que las partículas de plástico pueden acabar en el torrente sanguíneo humano.
Los indicadores anteriores de esto provenían de experimentos de laboratorio pero la investigación actual sugiere que las personas absorben microplásticos de su entorno en su vida cotidiana y que las cantidades son medibles en su sangre.
La concentración global de partículas de plástico en la sangre de los 22 donantes ascendía a una media de 1.6 microgramos por mililitro, lo que es comparable a una cucharadita de plástico en 1,000 litros de agua (diez bañeras grandes).
Una cuarta parte de los donantes analizados no tenía cantidades detectables de partículas de plástico de ningún tipo.
El tereftalato de polietileno (PET), el polietileno y los polímeros de estireno fueron los tipos de plástico más comunes encontrados en las muestras de sangre, seguidos del polimetilmetacrilato; también se analizó el polipropileno, pero las concentraciones eran demasiado bajas para una medición precisa.
El siguiente paso es conocer la posible facilidad con la que estas partículas pasan del torrente sanguíneo a los tejidos, por ejemplo en órganos como el cerebro.
Heather Leslie detalla que “ahora hemos demostrado que nuestro torrente sanguíneo, nuestro río de la vida por así decirlo, tiene plástico”.
Marja Lamoree añade: este conjunto de datos es el primero de este tipo y debe ampliarse para conocer la extensión de la contaminación por plástico en el cuerpo de los seres humanos, y lo perjudicial que puede ser.
“Con este conocimiento podremos determinar si la exposición a las partículas de plástico supone una amenaza para la salud pública”, agrega.
Esta investigación ha sido financiada por la ONG internacional Common Seas y el programa ZonMw Microplásticos y Salud.
Con este programa, ZonMw pretende conocer mejor los posibles efectos de las partículas de plástico sobre la salud y qué se puede hacer para limitar los posibles efectos nocivos. Los 15 proyectos a corto plazo de este programa ya han concluido.
No obstante, se ha demostrado que aún faltan conocimientos y que es necesario seguir investigando para determinar los riesgos para la salud.
En los Países Bajos, esta investigación de seguimiento la lleva a cabo el consorcio MOMENTUM, en el que participa la Vrije de Ámsterdam.
En el contexto europeo también están en marcha proyectos de investigación que estudian la exposición a los microplásticos y sus efectos nocivos.
El pasado enero, un grupo de científicos italianos encontró microplásticos en la placenta humana y siguen indagando sobre el efecto de este hallazgo en el organismo; los resultados también se publicaron en Environment International.
