Los gritos desgarradores de dos mujeres resonaban este miércoles en la entrada al Hospital General de Les Cayes, en el sur de Haití, saturado de personas heridas en el terremoto del pasado sábado, que también ha llevado a las funerarias de la ciudad al límite.
El terremoto de 7,2 grados registrado el sábado sigue cobrando víctimas mortales, cerca de dos mil, además de causar 10 mil heridos, aunque se espera que el balance continúe en aumento.
Los llantos descontrolados se deben, precisamente, a la muerte de un familiar que recibía atención en estas instalaciones, donde la estampa es dantesca y su atmósfera, asfixiante.
Camas con pacientes agonizando, heridos tumbados en colchonetas tiradas por el suelo, intensos lamentos de dolor, llegada de nuevos afectados, trasiego de personal médico que no tiene un minuto de respiro entre paciente y paciente.
La situación hospitalaria
Aún así, el doctor Boris Bechler, pediatra, dijo en declaraciones a EFE que empiezan a tener la situación «bajo control» en comparación a cómo estaba el sábado y el domingo, cuando la avalancha de afectados los desbordó por falta de personal, aunque después llegaron médicos para reforzar el servicio.
En las últimas horas están recibiendo, sobre todo, a personas con infecciones, muchos de ellos «procedentes de zonas remotas que no han podido beneficiarse de ningún tipo de atención como lavado y vendaje. Cuando llegan al hospital sus heridas están totalmente infectadas», explicó el médico.
Para seguir afrontando la situación, el hospital necesita urgentemente asépticos, analgésicos, hierro, materiales para hacer yesos, así como yodo, peróxido de hidrógeno, heparinas y fraxiparina, principalmente.
Entre los afectados hay muchos niños, acompañados de sus padres que, como si siguieran una coreografía, agitan con casi idéntica cadencia alguna prenda sobre las caras de los pequeños para aliviarlos mínimamente del calor que hace dentro del recinto.
Del exterior ya ha desaparecido el campamento que se improvisó el sábado tras el terremoto, a pesar de que las réplicas persisten, la última registrada este mismo miércoles cerca de la una de la tarde, a 38 kilómetros de Nippes, con una intensidad de 4,9 grados.
Solo en el área de urgencias se atiende a algunas personas fuera del pabellón, haciendo curas o revisando radiografías. En el área quirúrgica hay pacientes en los pasillos.
Es difícil hacer una estimación de número de personas ingresadas porque el espacio está dividido en tres bloques (zona roja, zona amarilla y quirófano), pero el doctor calcula que desde el sábado hasta hoy, han recibido entre 700 y 800 casos y que han ingresado entre 400 y 500 personas.
Se acumulan los cadáveres
Las funerarias de Les Cayes no dejan de acumular cadáveres, al menos eso señaló a EFE Jeantile Prosper, director de uno de estos negocios, que afirma que ya no puede recibir más fallecidos.
A la suya han llegado 41 cadáveres desde el sábado y ahí siguen alrededor de una decena, todos ellos identificados, que yacen tapados por plásticos y colchas, la mayoría de ellos en el suelo del patio de la funeraria.
Otro cuerpo a sumar es el que recuperaron hoy los bomberos de entre las ruinas de un edificio de apartamentos en el barrio de Brefèt, el décimo fallecido que encuentran bajo los escombros, entre los que aparecen muchos enseres personales.
También están haciendo trabajos de desescombro en lo que era una tienda del centro de la ciudad, donde decenas de personas rapiñan lo que va aflorando de entre los cascotes, de donde una máquina excavadora ha sacado incluso una motocicleta y la parte inferior de un maniquí.
La llegada de la ayuda humanitaria
Una avanzadilla del Programa Mundial de Alimentos ha repartido este lunes 3.500 raciones de comida preparadas en varios restaurantes de la ciudad, una pequeña ayuda para cubrir las necesidades mientras llega la ayuda del exterior, explicó a Efe Pierre Honnorat, responsable de la organización en el país.
Uno de los puntos de entrega ha sido el Hospital General, a donde volverán mañana para reparar las cocinas del centro sanitario para que puedan atender las necesidades de alimentación de los pacientes.
También este jueves llegará a Les Cayes ayudas de la Cruz Roja en un vuelo que las cargará en la República Dominicana, país vecino de Haití desde donde parte un corredor humanitario.
Además, hoy despegó de Madrid, España, un avión con cuatro expertos en emergencias, sanidad y protección civil y estructuras de edificaciones que colaborarán durante dos semanas en las tareas de ayuda junto a otros 13 especialistas europeos de diversas áreas.
