La variante delta no es la única que causa inquietud, puesto que también la alfa, la beta y la gama han surgido de mutaciones que las han hecho relativamente más transmisibles, virulentas y con el potencial de reducir la efectividad de las medidas recomendadas para contener la pandemia, razón por la cual la OMS las considera «variantes de preocupación».
Según el último informe epidemiológico de la organización, la variante delta (inicialmente detectada en India) se transmite actualmente en 135 países, la beta (Sudáfrica) en 132 , la gama (Brasil) en 81 y la alfa (Reino Unido) en 182.
Incógnitas sobre la inmunidad colectiva
«La cuestión de la inmunidad colectiva implica saber en qué medida la gente que no está vacunada está protegida simplemente porque vive entre gente que está inmunizada, pero no se trata de un simple número, ya que esto depende totalmente del nivel de transmisibilidad de un virus», explicó la responsable del Departamento de Inmunización de la OMS, Kate O’Brien.
El sarampión -una enfermedad altamente contagiosa que sigue circulando, para la que existe una vacuna desde hace casi seis décadas y que requiere un 95 % de cobertura de vacunación- es un ejemplo que podría compararse con el del coronavirus, comentó la experta.
O’Brien reconoció que ahora mismo, en el caso de la COVID-19, «no sabemos cuál es la proporción de gente que debe estar inmunizada para proveer alguna protección a quienes no están vacunados».
Un 70 % que podría revisarse al alza
Cuando empezó la inmunización contra la covid-19, los expertos partieron de la base de que se necesitaba vacunar a un 70 % de la población para alcanzar la inmunidad colectiva (también denominada «de rebaño» o «comunitaria»), pero la aparición de las variantes y su rápida propagación geográfica están forzando a una nueva reflexión al respecto.
O’Brien reconoció que «a medida que vemos variantes que son más transmisibles, ello significa que se necesitará una mayor proporción de la población que esté vacunada».
La idea que subyace en la inmunidad de rebaño es que los que no están vacunados logran una protección indirecta, ya que los vacunados forman una barrera alrededor de ellos, lo que explica que no se requiere necesariamente que todas las personas se vacunen.
No obstante, la transmisibilidad que va ganando el coronavirus (debido a los «errores» que sufre al transmitirse de una persona a otra y que modifican su código genético) apunta a que ahora la cobertura de vacunación necesaria podría más bien estar en torno al 80 % o más.
