Estados Unidos trasladó este miércoles a la alta comisionada de la ONU para los derechos humanos, Michelle Bachelet, su preocupación por la situación en varios países, entre ellos China, Venezuela y Birmania.
La embajadora estadounidense ante la ONU, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, mantuvo una reunión virtual con Bachelet, en la que trasladó ese mensaje, según informó su portavoz, Olivia Dalton, en un comunicado.
En su informe anual sobre derechos humanos, publicado la semana pasada, el Departamento de Estado de EEUU ya expresó su preocupación por las torturas y supuestas ejecuciones extrajudiciales en Venezuela y en otros países latinoamericanos como Cuba y Nicaragua.
En ese documento, Washington se refirió a Nicolás Maduro, como “régimen ilegítimo”, ya que la Administración de Joe Biden sigue reconociendo como mandatario interino de Venezuela al líder opositor Juan Guaidó, que se proclamó como tal en enero de 2019 con el apoyo de Donald Trump (2017-2021).
En el mismo informe, EEUU acusaba a China de “genocidio” y “crímenes de lesa humanidad” contra los uigures y otras minorías musulmanas en la provincia noroccidental de Xinjiang.
Además de China, Venezuela y Birmania, Thomas-Greenfield expresó la preocupación de EEUU por la situación de los derechos humanos en Etiopía y Yemen, y subrayó la importancia de que los responsables de abusos rindan cuentas.
Según su portavoz, la embajadora estadounidense expresó también el apoyo del Gobierno de Joe Biden al trabajo de la oficina de Bachelet para promover y proteger los derechos humanos en todo el mundo y recalcó la importancia de investigaciones independientes en este ámbito.
Además, Thomas-Greenfield abordó con la responsable de Naciones Unidas el regreso de EEUU al Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, órgano que abandonó bajo la Administración de Donald Trump y al que ha retornado con el actual Ejecutivo.
