España pidió a Canadá que reanude la búsqueda de las víctimas del naufragio de un pesquero español en aguas cercanas al país norteamericano, una tragedia que dejó nueve muertos y doce desaparecidos, informó el viernes el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, José Manuel Albares.
En declaraciones a la radio Onda Cero, Albares indicó que le pidió la víspera a su homóloga canadiense, Melanie Joly, «que en cuanto que las condiciones climáticas lo permitan, se siguiera con los esfuerzos en la medida de lo posible«.
«Las labores se tuvieron que suspender» el miércoles, menos de 48 horas después de iniciadas, «por las muy adversas condiciones climáticas [que] incluso ponían en riesgo la vida de los equipos de rescate«, explicó Albares.
El pesquero «Villa de Pitanxo«, con sede en la localidad pesquera gallega de Marín, Pontevedra (noroeste), se fue a pique el martes a 450 kilómetros de la isla canadiense de Terranova, en las glaciales aguas del Atlántico, con 24 tripulantes a bordo: 16 españoles, cinco peruanos y tres ghaneses.
Solo tres de ellos pudieron ser rescatados. Nueve cuerpos fueron recuperados del mar y doce siguen desaparecidos.
Las esperanzas de encontrar a alguno de ellos con vida son prácticamente nulas, dadas las bajas temperaturas del agua.
Pero en España, los familiares de los desaparecidos exigieron el jueves que prosiguieran las tareas de búsqueda hasta que se localizaran todos los cuerpos.
«Hay que seguir buscando los cuerpos, no se puede dejar a 12 personas tiradas dentro del mar así«, pidió el jueves desde Marín John Okutu, tío de Edemon Okutu, uno de los tripulantes ghaneses del barco, todavía desaparecido.
El gobierno español declaró el próximo lunes como día de luto nacional en memoria de las víctimas, anunció este viernes en rueda de prensa su portavoz, Isabel Rodríguez. Por su parte, la región de Galicia observa desde el miércoles tres días de luto.
El papa Francisco manifestó este viernes su «más sentido pésame» y su «solidaridad» con los allegados de las víctimas, según indicó el Vaticano en un comunicado.
Este viernes llegará a Terranova un barco con dos de los cadáveres recuperados y el sábado lo hará otra embarcación que transporta a los tres sobrevivientes y al resto de los cuerpos recuperados, agregó Isabel Rodríguez.
Este naufragio es la peor tragedia para el sector pesquero español en casi 40 años.
