El Palau de les Arts dispone de cuatro auditorios -para ópera, música, ballet y teatro- y se ha convertido en uno de los referentes arquitectónicos, culturales, turísticos del Mediterráneo español, primero por su programación musical y, después, por ser escenario, plató y sede de numerosos acontecimientos sociales, políticos, empresariales, deportivos, publicitarios y cinematográficos.
Entre sus principales impulsores musicales figuraron desde el inicio grandes nombres como los directores Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta y el tenor Plácido Domingo, entre otros, que dirigieron o participaron no solo en producciones operísticas y recitales, sino que supervisaron su desarrollo lírico y orquestal.
Sin embargo, no ha estado exento de polémica. Su construcción, en el recinto de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia, fue promovida por los gobiernos conservadores de la región y ciudad de Valencia, y tuvo repercusión periodística internacional.
