Equipos de rescate luchaban este martes contra la lluvia y el barro en la búsqueda de rastros de las 132 personas que iban a bordo del Boeing-737 de China Eastern que se estrelló en zona montañosa en el suroeste de China, tras una caída en picada de pocos minutos.
Más de 24 horas después del siniestro, cuyas causas siguen siendo desconocidas, se desvanecieron casi por completo las esperanzas de encontrar supervivientes del que podría ser el desastre aéreo más mortífero de China en casi tres décadas.
El vuelo MU5735 había despegado de Kunming en dirección a Cantón pero, en medio del vuelo, perdió más de 26 mil pies de altura (unos ocho metros) en apenas tres minutos y se estrelló en la región de Guangxi.
La aerolínea reconoció que personas a bordo del vuelo habían muerto, pero todavía debe ofrecer más detalles. Un portavoz del ministerio chino de Asuntos Exteriores indicó el martes que los pasajeros eran todos chinos.
En una inusualmente rápida reacción, el presidente Xi Jinping se dijo «conmocionado» y pidió investigar a fondo para que «se determinen las causas del accidente lo antes posible».
El martes se apreciaban restos calcinados del avión y rastros del incendio que causó, dijeron los socorristas a la AFP. Uno de ellos especuló que los pasajeros habían quedado «totalmente incinerados» por la intensidad de las llamas.
Un vecino de la zona, que solo dio su apellido Ou, relató haber escuchado un «ruido como un trueno» el lunes por la tarde, seguido por una virulenta explosión en las colinas circundantes.
Otro lugareño evocó un golpe «todavía más fuerte que un terremoto».
Los medios estatales mostraron equipos de rescate uniformados trepando por el terreno zarandeado por la caída del avión, entre árboles arrancados y escombros de la nave apenas reconocibles, pero donde se podía distinguir parte del ala con el emblema rozo y azul de la aerolínea.
Otras imágenes mostraban a operarios manejando drones para facilitar la búsqueda en ese terreno empinado y con densa vegetación.
El desastre ocurrió después de una caída en picado, según videos publicados por medios chinos cuya autenticidad no pudo ser verificada inmediatamente por la AFP.
En Cantón, empleados de la aerolínea asistían a las familias de los 123 pasajeros y los nueve tripulantes del avión.
