En la Villa Panamericana de Lima, convertida en hospital de emergencia, Papá Noel entrega regalos navideños a 126 niños enfermos de COVID-19. En vez del trineo tirado por renos, el barbudo regordete sube hasta lo alto de sus habitaciones encaramado en una escalera telescópica de bomberos.
En medio de un rebrote de la pandemia en Perú, los sorprendidos niños se alegran con la llegada anticipada de Papá Noel, y se asoman por las ventanas para recibir sus obsequios. En la villa, que albergó a los deportistas de los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019, actualmente están alojados unos 1.200 pacientes y los más de mil empleados, incluyendo 325 médicos y 354 enfermeros.
«Hemos hecho un saludo especial de aliento por Navidad a todas las familias que se vienen recuperando poco a poco», dice a la AFP el Papá Noel, encarnado por el comediante Paul Suárez, de 44 años.
Sobre la escalera telescópica del camión de bomberos, y con una mascarilla sobre su barba blanca, Papá Noel alcanzaba el martes hasta el último de los 20 pisos de las torres de dormitorios repartiendo los regalos que iba sacando de su bolsa.
Mientras tanto, y a nivel del suelo, unas 20 enfermeras con batas blancas o celestes y gorras navideñas bailaban al ritmo de los villancicos.
En la villa hay 126 menores hospitalizados. Sus síntomas son leves, pero fueron internados porque sus padres también se contagiaron con el virus, que ha matado a más de 201.000 personas en Perú, uno de los países más golpeados por la pandemia en el mundo.
Dos de las siete torres están destinadas a los niños. Las otras las ocupan los pacientes adultos y los empleados del hospital.
«Vamos a pasar Navidad acá»
«Estamos celebrando la Navidad con los niños, muchos van a pasar estas fiestas con nosotros porque están contaminados», dice a la AFP la enfermera jefe, Maritza Huapaya, quien vive en la villa desde que fue convertida en hospital a inicios de la pandemia, en marzo de 2020.
Desde entonces, más de 47.000 pacientes han pasado por este hospital, incluyendo 5.000 niños, indica el director de la villa, Juan Oriundo. Ninguno de ellos ha fallecido.
Solo los pacientes con síntomas leves son internados ahí, pues los graves deben ir a otros hospitales con unidades de cuidados intensivos y mayor equipamiento.
La ciudad olímpica está situada en el populoso distrito de Villa El Salvador, al sur de Lima. Después de los Panamericanos, sus 1.096 flamantes apartamentos comenzaron a ser reacondicionados para ser vendidos como viviendas, pero el proyecto quedó paralizado por la pandemia.
«Estoy acá porque toda la familia nos contagiamos de covid. Vamos a pasar Navidad acá», dice con resignación Amador Alfaro, de 67 años, quien permanece internado con su esposa, Leydi Pacaya, de 34 años, y su hija Soe, de 8.
«No se sabe»
Perú enfrenta un rebrote de la pandemia, que ha duplicado el último mes los contagios y los decesos. Ante ello, el gobierno prohibió las reuniones familiares y las fiestas en Navidad y Año Nuevo, y reforzó la campaña de vacunación, que alcanza al 72% de la población objetivo.
Pero «hay personas que no tienen conciencia en vacunarse. Nosotros tenemos parejas de esposos internados porque no quisieron vacunarse», asegura Huapaya, la enfermera.
«Estamos inmensamente agradecidos porque [los médicos y enfermeras] hacen una labor excepcional, se dedican a cuidarnos y encima traernos esta alegría en medio de tanta tristeza», dice Doris Díaz, comerciante de 44 años, quien está internada con sus dos hijos y su suegra.
Perú acumula más de dos millones de casos de covid-19 y más de 201.000 muertos, incluidos al menos 1.080 niños, según las autoridades sanitarias. Entre los fallecidos hay 551 médicos.
El país andino, de 33 millones de habitantes, tiene la mayor tasa de mortalidad por la pandemia en el mundo, 6.122 por cada millón de habitantes, según balance de la AFP basado en cifras oficiales.
A pesar del rebrote, los responsables del hospital esperan que en la Navidad de 2022 la pandemia sea asunto del pasado y la villa se haya convertido finalmente en condominio.
«Esperemos que sí, pero no se sabe eso, amigo», dice una funcionaria.
