El Vaticano defendió este miércoles al papa emérito Benedicto XVI, acusado en un informe de no haber hecho nada para impedir que varios sacerdotes abusaran de menores en la diócesis que dirigía en los años 1970-80 en Alemania y recordó su lucha contra la pederastia clerical.
El director editorial de los medios de comunicación de la Santa Sede, Andrea Tornielli, veterano vaticanista, recordó las medidas tomadas por Benedicto XVI durante su mandato papal así como su batalla contra la pedofilia desde que era cardenal, a cargo de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, el ex Santo Oficio.
Después de haber «combatido este fenómeno como Prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe», Joseph Ratzinger promulgó como pontífice «normas muy duras contra los clérigos abusadores, verdaderas leyes especiales para combatir la pederastia», escribió Tornielli en un editorial publicado en el portal de noticias del Vaticano, Vatican News.
«Benedicto XVI dio testimonio, con su ejemplo concreto, de la urgencia de un cambio de mentalidad, importante para combatir el fenómeno de los abusos, al escuchar y estar cerca de las víctimas a las que siempre hay que pedir perdón», recalcó.
«Fue justamente Joseph Ratzinger el primer papa que se reunió varias veces con las víctimas de abusos durante sus viajes apostólicos», recordó Tornielli, quien subrayó que el informe alemán «no es una investigación judicial y mucho menos un juicio final».
Las reconstrucciones contenidas en el informe alemán deben «ayudar a combatir la pederastia en la Iglesia si no se reducen a la búsqueda de chivos expiatorios fáciles y a juicios sumarios», advirtió.
«Sólo evitando estos riesgos podrán contribuir a la búsqueda de la justicia en la verdad y a un examen de conciencia colectivo sobre los errores del pasado», subrayó.
Benedicto XVI rectificó el lunes las declaraciones dadas a los autores del informe sobre una reunión en 1980 dedicada a un cura pederasta, aclarando que se aceptó la solicitud de proporcionarle un alojamiento durante su terapia y recalcando que no se tomó ninguna decisión sobre la atribución de una misión pastoral.
Tanto el Vaticano como el papa emérito manifestaron su «vergüenza» y «cercanía» a las víctimas de abusos sexuales tras la publicación del informe en Alemania.
