El Nacional es el «gran trofeo» que quiere llevarse el Gobierno nacional en su «afán» de acabar con medios independientes en el país, asegura a EFE el director de este diario, Miguel Henrique Otero.
«Allá quedaron los valientes», el centenar de compañeros que trabajan en el periódico ahora solo en su edición digital, pues en papel hace tiempo que no puede imprimirse, asevera el director desde Madrid.
Otero salió de Venezuela en 2015 a raíz de un proceso contra este medio, al que el número dos del chavismo, Diosdado Cabello, advierte con confiscar su sede en Caracas si no paga una multa de algo más de 13 millones de dólares.
Multa millonaria
“No lo vamos a pagar”, subraya el responsable de este diario fundado por su familia en 1943.
Al diario le reclaman esa cantidad millonaria por daño moral a raíz de que el periódico replicara una información publicada por otros medios sobre una causa en un tribunal de Estados Unidos que vincula con narcotráfico a Diosdado Cabello, que entonces era presidente de la Asamblea Nacional de Venezuela.
La Agencia Antidrogas de Estados Unidos (DEA, en sus siglas en inglés) emitió tres años después una orden internacional de captura contra Cabello, “lo que demuestra que no había difamación” con aquella noticia, señala Otero.
El director mantiene que lo que quiere Cabello, ahora desde su puesto de diputado aunque a su juicio es el que “más manda” en el Gobierno venezolano, es apropiarse de “un gran baluarte de la democracia”, uno de los últimos medios independientes que quedan en su país.
Nunca hubo juicio, denuncia, sino una “persecución política” a través de unos tribunales que Otero considera claramente al servicio del Gobierno que preside Nicolás Maduro, con esa reclamación millonaria y “totalmente irregular”.
No es el Estado quien se quedaría con el edificio y la rotativa del diario, sino Diosdado Cabello para él personalmente, sentencia el director.
“Es todo una especie de complot”, afirma, del Gobierno de Maduro que poco a poco ha ido “cercenando la libertad de expresión” en Venezuela.
Una salida complicada
Si Venezuela quiere dar imagen de seguridad jurídica para atraer inversores, casos como el de este y otros medios de comunicación muestran lo contrario, alerta el director de El Nacional.
“Nosotros seguimos luchando”, declara, incluso ante instancias internacionales, ya sea la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH), la Unión Europea o gobiernos como los de Estados Unidos y España.
La solución a la demanda que enfrenta El Nacional es “imposible” mientras Maduro siga en el poder con el plan que ideó su antecesor Hugo Chávez de “hegemonía comunicacional”, que no conlleva un cierre repentino de todos los medios críticos como harían “los dictadores tradicionales”, si no que “va poquito a poco”, lamenta.
Primero fue que no pudieran salir en papel a su cita diaria con los lectores y ahora se intenta bloquear sus ediciones digitales, alerta.
Pero “la web no la pueden expropiar”, sentencia el responsable de este diario que en diciembre de 2018 tuvo que dejar de editarse en papel, mientras muestra en la capital de España un ejemplar del último número que salió impreso.
