El Sevilla pierde un poco la estela del líder, el Real Madrid, y tras este empate se aleja a seis puntos en el segundo puesto de la clasificación, mientras que al Espanyol se le continúa resistiendo la victoria en 2022, en el que ha sumado tres derrotas y tres empates que le dejan en tierra de nadie.
El encuentro empezó con poco ritmo, con los dos equipos mostrándose respeto. Reflejo de ello fue la inocencia del primer disparo. Llegó en el minuto 4, cuando Tonny Vilhena logró hacerse un hueco en la frontal del área. Pero resbaló justo antes de impactar el balón y éste acabó sin problemas en las manos de Yassine Bounou ‘Bono’.
No fue más prometedora la primera llegada del Sevilla, que se produjo en el minuto 15. Rafa Mir cazó un balón en profundidad, pero su intento esquinado no cogió la fuerza suficiente para inquietar a Diego López.
Vicente Moreno pidió en la previa un gran ambiente en el RCDE Stadium, similar al que se vivió el pasado domingo en el derbi barcelonés ante el Barça (2-2), y la afición respondió a la llamada del técnico con una buena entrada. 24.897 espectadores se reunieron en el feudo blanquiazul para recibir al Sevilla.
El único cambio en el once local respecto al empate ante el Barça fue la entrada de Óscar Gil, que acabaría dando una asistencia de gol, por Aleix Vidal en el lateral derecho.
