El secretario de Estado de EEUU, Antony Blinken, reveló este domingo que Washington está conversando con sus aliados en Europa para prohibir la importación de petróleo de Rusia, en lo que supondría un nuevo golpe a la economía rusa en represalia por la guerra en Ucrania.
Blinken, que se encuentra en Moldavia, explicó en una entrevista en CNN que ayer sábado habló por teléfono sobre ese tema con el presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, y otros miembros del Gobierno.
«Estamos ahora -explicó- conversando con nuestros aliados europeos y nuestros aliados para mirar de manera coordinada a la posibilidad de prohibir la importación de petróleo ruso mientras nos aseguramos de que hay una oferta suficiente de petróleo en los mercados globales. Las conversaciones son muy activas».
Prohibir las importaciones de petróleo privaría al Kremlin de una importante fuente de ingresos, pero podría perjudicar a la economía mundial al provocar una subida de precios de la energía, ya altos de por sí, por lo que los gobiernos occidentales se han resistido a adoptar esa medida por ahora.
En EEUU, legisladores demócratas y republicanos han presionado en los últimos días a Biden para que Washington deje de comprar petróleo y productos derivados del crudo de Rusia con el argumento de que los ingresos de esas importaciones sirven al Kremlin para financiar la guerra en Ucrania.
Además, este sábado, el presidente ucraniano, Volodímir Zelenski, se reunió de manera virtual con 280 miembros del Congreso de EE.UU. y les pidió ayuda para que se prohíba la importación de petróleo procedente de Rusia, ante lo que muchos legisladores expresaron su respaldo.
Aunque el veto al petróleo ruso ha ganado apoyo en EEUU a nivel doméstico, la Unión Europea (UE) aún no ha expresado su aprobación.
También en una entrevista este domingo con CNN, la presidenta de la Comisión Europea (CE), Ursula von der Leyen, que se encuentra en Berlín, reiteró su deseo de que Europa deje de depender de Rusia, diversifique sus fuentes de energía y acelere su inversión en energías renovables.
No obstante, rechazó hacer comentarios sobre cualquier conversación con Washington acerca del petróleo ruso.
La UE depende de Rusia para el suministro de energía, ya que importa el 41 por ciento del gas natural y el 27 por ciento del petróleo que consume de ese país, según datos de 2019 de Eurostat.
A diferencia de la Unión Europea, EEUU tiene capacidad para producir su propio gas y petróleo gracias a la fracturación hidráulica y otras formas de extracción, aunque sigue importando energía de otros países porque su consumo doméstico es mucho mayor que la producción interna.
Estados Unidos, sin embargo, depende mucho menos de Rusia y solo importa el 7,9 por ciento de petróleo de ese país, de acuerdo a la Administración de Información Energética de Estados Unidos (EIA, por sus siglas en inglés)
