La Casa Blanca confirmó este lunes el viaje de una delegación estadounidense de alto nivel a Caracas este fin de semana para sostener encuentros con el Gobierno del presidente venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, sobre «seguridad energética» en medio de la escalada de precios del petróleo por la invasión rusa a Ucrania.
Así lo indicó en rueda de prensa Jen Psaki, la portavoz de la Casa Blanca, al ser preguntada por estas conversaciones directas entre Washington y Caracas, las de mayor de nivel entre ambas partes en la capital venezolana en años.
«El propósito del viaje (a Venezuela) era discutir diferentes temas, entre ellos desde luego la seguridad energética», señaló la portavoz presidencial.
Psaki remarcó que las discusiones con miembros del gobierno venezolano «se produjeron en los últimos días» y apuntó que «continúan».
Los funcionarios estadounidenses, agregó, también trataron la situación de los seis exdirectivos de Citgo (filial de la petrolera estatal venezolana PDVSA), cinco de los cuales son ciudadanos estadounidenses y uno residente permanente, actualmente en prisión en Caracas, reseña EFE.
La portavoz evitó ofrecer más detalles al respecto de los encuentros con el Gobierno venezolano, uno de los principales aliados de Rusia en Latinoamérica.
El diario The New York Times, que adelantó la noticia de este viaje, precisó que la delegación estadounidense estuvo encabezada por Juan González, asesor de la Casa Blanca para Latinoamérica.
En los últimos días, los medios estadounidenses aseguraron que la Administración del presidente Joe Biden evalúa la posibilidad de levantar parte de las sanciones petroleras a Venezuela con el objetivo de que el país caribeño aumente su oferta petrolera, lo que podría ayudar a aliviar las presiones al alza sobre el precio del barril de crudo en los mercados internacionales.
Estados Unidos, bajo la presidencia de Donald Trump (2017-2021) impuso duras sanciones económicas contra Venezuela en 2019, entre ellas a las exportaciones de petróleo, el principal motor económico venezolano, que Biden ha mantenido desde su llegada a la Casa Blanca en enero de 2021.
