La Tri escaló hasta el tercer lugar en la tabla de clasificaciones con 16 puntos al ganarle a Bolivia y tendrá que buscar un resultado similar para afianzar su clasificación al mundial.
El encuentro, que corresponde a la quinta jornada del torneo, debió disputarse en marzo pasado, pero fue suspendido por la pandemia del coronavirus, y también por la falta de apoyo por parte de los clubes europeos, que se negaron a ceder a sus jugadores a las selecciones sudamericanas por el temor al contagio de la COVID-19.
El seleccionador de Ecuador, Gustavo Alfaro, convocó el viernes al defensa derecho José Hurtado, del Independiente del Valle, en reemplazo de Byron Castillo, quien sufrió una lesión el jueves ante Bolivia.
Otra duda para el partido ante Venezuela, es el atacante Gonzalo Plata, que tuvo una molestia física desde el comienzo del encuentro con Bolivia, que disminuyó en gran medida su nivel futbolístico.
Alfaro no ha decidido aún si mantendrá al debutante portero Moisés Ramírez de 21 años, o si retornará al arco el experimentado Alexander Domínguez.
Por su parte, Venezuela se aleja cada vez más de la clasificación a Catar 2022, al sufrir otro revés contra Brasil el jueves, con lo que se mantiene en el último lugar de la tabla de clasificaciones con cuatro puntos.
La Vinotinto contará nuevamente con el seleccionador interino, Leonardo González, quien tomó las riendas tras la renuncia del técnico portugués José Peseiro tras más de un año sin percibir su sueldo.
