El presidente colombiano, Iván Duque, acordó este sábado con el príncipe heredero de Abu Dabi, Mohamed bin Zayed, en Dubái el establecimiento de un centro de operaciones en Colombia. Según el mandatario, el acuerdo surge con la intención de convertir a la región en el principal socio comercial de Emiratos Árabes Unidos (EAU) en América.
«Dialogamos sobre cómo convertir a Colombia en el principal socio comercial de los Emiratos Árabes en América y acordamos hacerlo a través de la instalación de Hub, que garantizará más inversión y empleos», explicó Duque en su cuenta de Twitter tras reunirse con Bin Zayed, y gobernante de facto de EAU, en la Expo de Dubái.
El presidente colombiano añadió que su interlocutor expresó su interés por «impulsar inversión, proyectos ambientales ei intercambios en innovación y tecnología».
La agencia de noticias oficial emiratí, Wam, indicó que en el encuentro, que tuvo lugar en el pabellón de Emiratos en la Expo2020, ambos mandatarios «abordaron las relaciones de amistad y el nivel de cooperación conjunta entre los dos países así como las posibilidades de desarrollarlas en diversos aspectos, especialmente inversión, economía y turismo».
Duque llegó el pasado jueves a Dubái, tras una gira que lo llevó a Reino Unido y Francia, aunque comenzó su agenda de actividades el viernes, con diversas entrevistas con autoridades locales, un foro con inversores y una visita al pabellón de Colombia en la Expo2020 en coincidencia con el día Nacional del país en dicho evento.
La visita del presidente colombiano al país árabe, al que llegó acompañado de cinco ministros, tiene un marcado carácter económico y como principal objetivo atraer inversiones a su país e impulsar el comercio bilateral, que en 2019 alcanzó los 189,6 millones de dólares.
El viernes aseguró que con en lo que va de Expo, que fue inaugurada el pasado 1 de octubre con un año de retraso por la pandemia de COVID-19, Colombia ya ha obtenido compromisos de inversión por más de 70 millones de dólares.
