Tras haberse sometido a dos operaciones de rodilla en 2020, “el objetivo era jugar otro Wimbledon”, explicó después en rueda de prensa, precisando que ahora no sabe qué va a hacer.
“Vamos a hablar un poco esta noche” y luego a “tomar unos cuantos días” para analizar lo ocurrido, dijo. Aseguró no sentir molestias físicas pero no haber recuperado aún la fuerza física y mental “para ser más competitivo”.
“A mi edad nunca sabes que te espera a la vuelta de la esquina”, afirmó, pero, aunque no quiso definirse sobre si participará en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio, aseguró que “el objetivo es seguir jugando” y confiar en que la jubilación “no va a ocurrir” ahora.
Si al principio del partido Federer logró mantenerse firme ante un jugador muy alto con un gran saque, que había eliminado en octavos al ruso Daniil Medvedev (2º), a partir de la primera rotura en el sexto juego todo fue inútil.
El polaco, de 24 años, que hasta ahora nunca había superado la tercera ronda de un Grand Slam, le atacó insistentemente en el revés y aunque concedió un juego de servicio en la segunda manga recuperó el terreno perdido para acabar imponiéndose en el tie break.
Allí, y pese al enorme apoyo del público londinense, Federer cometió graves errores casi inimaginables en él y que repitió en el tercer set, para ser derrotado en 6-0 por primera vez en Wimbledon.
“Esto es superespecial para mí”, es “como un sueño hecho realidad”, aseguró Hurkacz tras el partido, al término del cual los espectadores despidieron al suizo con una inmensa ovación.

Por su parte, Djokovic, que persigue igualar el récord de 20º títulos de Grand Slam que comparten Federer y el español Rafael Nadal -ausente de Wimbledon este año-, se impuso sin gran dificultad al húngaro Marton Fucsovics (48º) por 6-3, 6-4 y 6-4.
