La demolición de lo que queda del edificio Champlain Towers South, parcialmente caído el 24 de junio por causas aun no determinadas, puede llevarse a cabo este domingo por la noche, según confirmó uno de los jefes de los bomberos de Miami-Dade.
La inestable estructura va a ser derribada con explosivos para evitar que caiga de manera descontrolada con los vientos y lluvias que se espera produzca la tormenta tropical Elsa al acercarse al sur de Florida probablemente a partir del lunes por la noche.
La búsqueda de las 121 personas que siguen sin ser localizadas después del desastre está interrumpida desde el sábado por la tarde para preparar la demolición.
El jefe de los equipos de rescate de los bomberos de Miami-Dade, Ray Jadallah, dijo que están “apuntando a un momento durante la noche de hoy” para la demolición.
Jadallah habló así al salir de una reunión con familiares de las víctimas y desaparecidos del derrumbe, que deja hasta ahora 24 muertos y 121 desaparecidos, entre ellas argentinos, chilenos, colombianos cubanos y venezolanos.
Las dos últimas víctimas identificadas son Graciela Cattarossi, argentina de 48 años y madre de una niña de siete años cuyo cuerpo ya había sido identificado, y Gonzalo Torre, de 81.
De acuerdo con Jadallah, los encargados de la demolición están hoy perforando pequeños hoyos en los cimientos del edificio para luego colocar en ellos los explosivos que serán detonados para derribarlo.
En una reunión que tendrá lugar hoy se definirá con exactitud cuando se hará la demolición. De acuerdo con las autoridades, las tareas de búsqueda y rescate se reanudaran lo antes posible.
Miami-Dade está fuera de la trayectoria de Elsa, que, según el Centro Nacional de Huracanes de EEUU, avanzará cerca o sobre la costa del oeste de Florida el martes, pero aun así las condiciones meteorológicas no serán buenas en el condado del sureste del estado donde se produjo el derrumbe.
