A pesar de que cada vez conocemos más información sobre el VIH, siempre ha sido un tema tabú y continúa habiendo mucho estigma en torno a la enfermedad. Cualquier persona puede contraer Sida, incluso las personalidades más ricas o las más conocidas. ¿Pero de qué sirve tener fama y dinero si falta lo fundamental, la salud?
Desde las butacas de las salas de cine y los focos de la gran pantalla con el actor Pedro Zamora, pasando por las gafas de bucear de Greg Louganis, o por las zapatillas de baloncesto de Magic Johnson, hasta exigir un papel protagonista en los más prestigiosos escenarios con Freddy Mercury.
El VIH se ha apoderado de las almas de muchos rostros conocidos, en algunos casos, apagando su luz para siempre, añadiéndolas en su mochila, donde siempre hay hueco para alguien más. Destacamos a ocho celebridades que han tenido el coraje de hacer público su estado de VIH, con el objetivo de crear conciencia y ayudar a todos aquellos cuya voz se debilita, cada día un poco más, bajo la sombra de la enfermedad, reseñó Europa FM.
Arthur Ashe, tenista de renombre mundial, participó de manera activa en la concienciación sobre el VIH y el Sida.
Ashe contrajo el VIH por a una trasfusión de sangre tras someterse a una operación de corazón en el año 1983. Debido a que en la prensa comenzaron a correr rumores, hizo pública su condición.
En 1992 dio unas declaraciones en The New York Times que desataron un fuerte movimiento de concienciación sobre el VIH y el Sida: “Así como estoy seguro de que todos en esta sala tienen algún asunto personal que le gustaría mantener en privado, nosotros también. Ciertamente, no hubo ningún asunto médico o necesidad física de hacer pública mi condición médica”.
En consecuencia, más celebridades comenzaron a hacer público su diagnóstico de la afección. Pero el tenista no ganó el partido, y derrotado por un VIH que jugaba con muy poca deportividad, Arthur Ashe falleció en 1993 a la edad de 49 años.
Dicen que la música ayuda a combatir las enfermedades, pero en este caso, ni los mejores éxitos hip-hop de los años 90 consiguieron vencer al VIH.
Eric Lynn Wright, artísticamente conocido como Eazy-E, era miembro del grupo de hip-hop con sede en Los Ángeles NWA. Sin embargo, en 1995 falleció, justo un mes después de recibir su diagnóstico de SIDA.
Entre sus últimas palabras, un mensaje de redención, junto con sus últimos recuerdos, se grabó en la mente de todos sus seguidores, y que probablemente sigan recordando a día de hoy. “No digo esto porque estoy buscando un cojín suave donde sea que me dirija, solo siento que tengo miles y miles de jóvenes aficionados que tienen que aprender qué es real en lo que respecta al sida. Como los demás antes que yo, me gustaría convertir mi propio problema en algo bueno que llegue a todos mis amigos y sus parientes”.
Eazy-E no pudo luchar de manera activa por la causa, pero si ha tenido la oportunidad de hacerlo su hijo, el rapero Lil Eazy-E, que ha continuado con el legado musical de su padre, cogiéndole el relevo en su carrera artística y convirtiéndose en un conocido activista del VIH y del Sida.
Fue campeón olímpico en la década de 1980. Pero su cara más conocida no es la de ser un buceador de renombre, sino la de ser un auténtico luchador contra el VIH. Greg Louganis se quitó su traje de buceo y sus gafas acuáticas, y se puso una armadura, cogió su arma más poderosa y batalló, con todas sus fuerzas, contra este gran enemigo.
Le diagnosticaron VIH en 1988 y desde entonces, ha utilizado su pasión por el buceo como motivo para seguir adelante, dando pasos y ganando pequeños duelos. Al recordar su diagnóstico, Louganis le dijo a ESPN en 2016: “Mi médico me animó a que lo más saludable para mí sería seguir entrenando para los Juegos Olímpicos. El buceo fue algo mucho más positivo en lo que enfocarse. Sufrí de depresión; si tuviéramos un día libre, no podría levantarme de la cama. Simplemente me taparía la cabeza con las mantas. Pero siempre que tuviera algo en el calendario, aparecía”.
Actualmente, Louganis continúa siendo toda una inspiración, no solo para los atletas o los más deportistas, sino también para todos aquellos que luchan contra el estigma del VIH.
Freddie Mercury es el rostro del Sida. El 23 de noviembre de 1991, la estrella del rock anunció al mundo entero que era portador del virus VIH. El líder de Queen visibilizaba así una enfermedad contra la que llevaba luchando años. El impacto que supuso esta confesión por parte del artista se agigantó porque, tan solo un día después, el cantante falleció de Sida.
Los Angeles Times informó el anuncio que hizo poco antes de su muerte: “Tras la enorme conjetura de la prensa durante las últimas dos semanas, deseo confirmar que he dado positivo en la prueba del VIH y tengo SIDA. Sentí que era correcto mantener esta información privada hasta la fecha para proteger la privacidad de quienes me rodean. Sin embargo, ha llegado el momento de que mis amigos y fanáticos de todo el mundo sepan la verdad y espero que todos se unan a mí, a mis médicos y a todos los de todo el mundo en la lucha contra esta terrible enfermedad”.
Con 41 años, una de las voces más conocidas en todo el mundo dejó de cantar para siempre. Freddie Mercury y su innegable talento musical, siguen inspirando a la gente en la actualidad.
