La muerte del futbolista de Villa Teresa (Segunda División del fútbol uruguayo), Williams Martínez, significó un duro golpe para el deporte charrúa. Según informó la agencia EFE, fuentes de la Mutual Uruguaya de Futbolistas Profesionales (MUFP) reconocieron que se trató de un suicidio.
El zaguero, de 38 años, estaba disputando el torneo Apertura de la Segunda División aunque llevaba algunas fechas fuera del plantel debido a que había sido diagnosticado con un positivo de contagio por Covid-19 el 23 de junio pasado.
El experimentado jugador tuvo una dilatada trayectoria que incluyó a equipos como el Defensor Sporting, Ferro argentino, West Bromwich –donde compartió equipo con el reconocido exfutbolista Nwankwo Kanu, o el Reims, donde fue dirigido por el franco-español Luis Fernández.
“Lamentamos con profundo dolor y conmoción el fallecimiento del jugador uruguayo Williams Martínez. Nuestras condolencias a sus familiares y amigos. Q.E.P.D.”, publicó la Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF) en su cuenta de Twitter.
Asimismo, fueron varios los equipos que se hicieron eco de la trágica noticia y recordaron al futbolista.
“Una noticia nos golpea y muy duro. Williams Martínez falleció en la noche de hoy. No hay palabras ni consuelo. Q.E.P.D. campeón. Con esa sonrisa te recordaremos siempre”, publicó el Defensor Sporting -club de donde surgió Martínez- junto a una foto suya celebrando.
Cabe señalar que el fallecimiento de Martínez se dio en el mismo día en el que Uruguay conmemora el Día Nacional Para la Prevención del Suicidio.
Según el último registro presentado por el Gobierno uruguayo este viernes, en 2020 hubo 718 suicidios y una tasa de 20,30 cada 100 mil habitantes, por lo que esta problemática es de las que despierta mayores preocupaciones a nivel nacional.
Del total de casos, 80,92 % son hombres, aunque en relación a los intentos de suicidio las mujeres son las que más cantidad registran.
En febrero de este año el también futbolista uruguayo Santiago ‘Morro’ García se suicidó en su hogar en Argentina mientras militaba en el Godoy Cruz de aquel país. Ambos jugadores supieron ser compañeros de equipo en 2014, en el River Plate uruguayo.
Los especialistas remarcan que las muertes por suicidio nunca tienen un único detonante, sino que son el resultado de factores psicológicos, biológicos y sociales que tienen tratamiento.
