Colombiana Tatiana Calderón ya tiene equipo para correr en la serie IndyCar

Tatiana Calderón correrá con el equipo AJ Foyt Racing esta temporada y se convertirá en la primera mujer en competir con regularidad en la IndyCar desde 2013.

La colombiana estará al volante del tercer monoplaza Indy de Foyt en los circuitos callejeros y mixtos, acompañando a Dalton Kellett y Kyle Kirkwood, el campeón de Indy Lights, según se anunció el lunes. Aún no se ha confirmado ningún piloto para conducir el coche con el número 11 en las carreras de óvalos.

Calderón será patrocinada por el ROKiT Group, una empresa de medios de comunicación global que también patrocinará al novato Kirkwood esta temporada.

IndyCar no ha tenido a una mujer piloto en forma regular desde la incursión de Simona de Silvestro en 2013, aunque la suiza disputó las 500 Millas de Indianápolis el mes pasado en un equipo conformado mayomente por mujeres.

Calderón será la primer mujer en el equipo de Foyt, un cuatro veces ganador de las Indy 500 que cumplió 87 años el domingo. Foyt fue uno de los pocos que no rechazó a Janet Guthrie cuando ésta intentó convertirse en la primera mujer en disputar las Indy 500 hace casi 50 años atrás.

Con Guthrie intentando mostrar su capacidad durante una prueba en 1976 al volante de un auto que era muy lento, Foyt le permitió realizar vueltas con su segundo auto. La máquina más rápida le permitió a Guthrie tener tiempos más rápidos y así pudo intentar clasificarse a la carrera, aunque Foyt nunca aportó un coche para la pionera.

Gracias al apoyo del ROKiT Group, Foyt tendrá a una mujer en uno de sus monoplazas. ROKiT patrocina a Calderón desde 2020, cuando la colombiana compitió en el Campeonato Mundial de Resistencia y la Súper Fórmula de Japón.

“Uno de nuestros principios fundamentales en la comercialización general de la marca ROKIT en todo el mundo es nuestro apoyo y promoción de las mujeres en el automovilismo deportivo y, como parte de ese principio, hemos apoyado a Tatiana desde hace mucho tiempo”, dijo el director ejecutivo Jonathan Kendrick. “Reconocimos su talento y carisma desde el principio, y lo hemos visto crecer y desarrollarse”.

“Sabemos que Tatiana ya es una modelo a seguir para muchas jóvenes pilotos en todo el mundo y creemos que la enorme exposición de IndyCar sólo servirá para tener un mayor perfil para convertirse en una inspiración para que muchas más mujeres se involucren en el automovilismo deportivo”, añadió.

Calderón, de 28 años, disputó las últimas dos temporadas en la Súper Fórmula Japonesa con el equipo Threebond Drago Corse y con el equipo Richard Mille Racing en el Mundial de Resistencia de la FIA. También ha sido piloto de pruebas de la Fórmula Uno con Alfa Romeo en los últimos cuatro años.

Nacida en Bogotá y actual residente en Madrid, Caldeón puso a prueba el número 14 en el circuito de Mid-Ohio en julio pasado para iniciar el proceso para acceder a IndyCar.

“Desde que empecé mi carrera en monoplazas en Estados Unidos hace 11 años, IndyCar ha sido una referencia para mí y es un sueño hecho realidad estar en la parrilla este año”, dijo la colombiana. “Soy consciente del desafío que tengo por delante, pero esta es una oportunidad única y quiero capitalizarla al máximo”.

Calderón participará de un test con Kirkwood en el circuito de Sebring en Florida esta semana.

La temporada arrancará el 27 de febrero en el circuito urbano de San Petersburgo.
