El gobierno colombiano entregó a la Interpol para su extradición a Estados Unidos a un hombre presentado como militante del Ejército Nacional de Liberación (ELN), la última guerrilla reconocida de América.
José Gabriel Álvarez Ortiz, alias ‘Alex’, quedó en poder de la Interpol este miércoles “para que (…) sea trasladado y entregado a la justicia de los Estados Unidos”, informó en un mensaje de Twitter el ministro de Justicia, Wilson Ruiz, reseñó AFP.
Al igual que otros dos presuntos miembros de esa guerrilla entregados a la justicia estadounidense en agosto, Álvarez es requerido por una corte del estado de Texas “por fabricar, distribuir y poseer (…) cocaína” en la frontera con Venezuela para exportarla a Estados Unidos, según la Fiscalía.
El ELN niega que estas personas pertenezcan a sus filas.
Álvarez fue arrestado en septiembre de 2020 en Ocaña, un municipio cercano a la frontera con Venezuela. Su salida se pospuso varias semanas por un contagio de coronavirus.
En marzo, el gobierno de Iván Duque anunció la extradición de once miembros de esa guerrilla, activa desde 1964 y compuesta por unos 2.300 combatientes.
El mandatario conservador sepultó los diálogos de paz que sostenía su antecesor, el Nobel de Paz Juan Manuel Santos, con el ELN a raíz de un ataque con coche bomba contra una academia policial que dejó 22 cadetes muertos, además del agresor, a principios de 2019.
El mandatario exige a Cuba la extradición de los rebeldes que quedaron en su territorio tras la fallida negociación, pero la isla rechaza el pedido alegando respeto por los protocolos que suscribió con Colombia y países garantes, que prevén el retorno de la delegación a sus campamentos de forma segura.
Colombia es el mayor productor de cocaína en el mundo, y Estados Unidos el principal consumidor de esta droga.
