Chile se convierte en el segundo país del mundo en aplicar la cuarta dosis anticovid

Chile se convirtió este lunes en el segundo país del mundo, después de Israel, en empezar a aplicar la cuarta dosis de la vacuna contra la COVID-19, en momentos en que la variante ómicron y la alta movilidad de las fiestas navideñas han disparado los contagios.

Los primeros que están recibiendo la segunda dosis de refuerzo son las personas inmunodeprimidas, aunque desde el 7 de febrero la vacunación se extenderá a los mayores de 55 años que hayan cumplido seis meses desde su anterior inyección.

«Las vacunas, con el paso del tiempo, van perdiendo eficacia, se va disminuyendo la protección que generan y las nuevas variantes también les hacen perder fuerza. Y por eso es muy importante estar preparados, anticiparse», dijo el presidente chileno, Sebastián Piñera.

El mandatario conservador, quien dejará el poder el próximo 11 de marzo, aseguró que la cuarta vacuna «aumenta en 20 veces la protección que tiene una persona respecto a otra que no tiene su vacunación completa».

Por su parte, la subsecretaria de salud pública de ese país, María Teresa Valenzuela, informó que ya se han detectado 1.046 casos de ómicron en la nación sudamericana.
