La ciudad de Caracas arribó a la edición número 58 del encendido de la «Cruz de El Ávila», tradición que se celebra en el Parque Waraira Repano.
El ingeniero estadounidense, Ottomar Pfersdorff, arribó al país en los años 40, formando parte de la Electricidad de Caracas desde 1948, e ingenió la manera de reproducir desde lo alto de esta montaña la imagen de una cruz en las ventanas del Hotel Humboldt.
De esta manera, en 1963 las luces y cortinas de las habitaciones de los primeros 14 pisos del Humboldt dieron forma por primera vez al símbolo que para muchos caraqueños marca actualmente el inicio de la Navidad.
Casi 30 años trabajó en la Electricidad de Caracas como ingeniero en el Departamento de Producción y el ícono perduró en su cabeza casi la mitad de ese tiempo hasta que finalmente se materializó.
La idea se materializó
Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) prestó su antena de 30 metros de alto por 20 de ancho ubicada en Los Mecedores y 120 lámparas fijas y cuatro de destello encendieron la Navidad en 1966. Posteriormente, en 1969 se concibió la idea de que un niño fuese el que tuviese el privilegio de encender las luces, siendo Ibelice Margarita Díaz, alumna de la unidad educativa Juan Antonio Pérez Bonalde de Catia, la primera en tener este honor.
En 1981 se alzó entonces en el cerro Papelón a 1.530 metros sobre el nivel de mar la más grande cruz en El Ávila, enseñoreándose en el valle de Caracas. Un equipo experto de ingenieros diseñó e instaló en apenas dos meses este símbolo navideño que tiene 37 metros de largo y 18 de ancho.
Se interrumpieron las costumbres cuando por primera vez el presidente, Nicolás Maduro, decidió adelantar la navidad y con ello el encendido de la Cruz un 1°de noviembre.
