«Estamos profundamente preocupados por la violenta represión de las protestas por parte del régimen cubano«, expresó el primer ministro Justin Trudeau en una conferencia de prensa en Montreal, en el que es uno de sus pocos comentarios sobre Cuba en los últimos años.
«Apoyamos al pueblo de Cuba que quiere y merece democracia, libertad y respeto«, apostó.
Canadá mantuvo lazos con Cuba después de su revolución de 1959 y Trudeau realizó una visita oficial a la isla en noviembre de 2016. Con esto, Canadá ha actuado a veces como intermediario entre el gobierno cubano y Estados Unidos y otros países en temas como las disputadas elecciones en Venezuela.
El domingo, miles de cubanos protagonizaron las mayores protestas contra el gobierno en décadas para rechazar la profunda crisis económica que ha provocado escasez de productos básicos y cortes de energía.
Los manifestantes también protestaron contra el manejo del gobierno de la pandemia de coronavirus y las restricciones a las libertades civiles.
La primera visita de Estado de Trudeau a Cuba ocurrió cuando tenía solo cuatro años y acompañó a su padre Pierre, quien era entonces primer ministro.DW
