Brasil reportó este jueves su primera víctima fatal por ómicron, un anciano residente en un municipio del centro del país que pese a contar con las tres dosis de la vacuna no consiguió vencer a la nueva variante de la COVID-19, informaron este miércoles fuentes oficiales.
El hombre de 68 años, que también puede ser la primera víctima de la nueva variante del coronavirus en Latinoamérica, ya que hasta ahora ningún otro país ha notificado datos de muertes por ómicron, falleció en Aparecida de Goiania, un municipio del estado de Goiás, en el centro de Brasil, donde la nueva variante ya es responsable por el 93,5 % de los casos.
De acuerdo con la alcaldía del municipio, la víctima había recibido las dos dosis reglamentarias del esquema de vacunación y una tercera de refuerzo, pero padecía varias comorbilidades, como hipertensión arterial y enfermedad pulmonar crónica.
Según las autoridades sanitarias, hasta la fecha ya son 55 los casos de ómicron reportados en Aparecida de Goiania, en donde la transmisión por ómicron ya es reconocida como comunitaria, es decir entre personas que no han tenido contacto con infectados en el exterior, reseña EFE.
«Perdimos a un paciente vacunado que tenía problemas de salud crónicos, que son factores de riesgo importantes para la COVID-19. Desafortunadamente, no resistió. Una vida perdida entre miles salvadas por la inmunización», dijo el secretario de salud del municipio, Alessandro Magalhaes.
La confirmación de la primera muerte por la ómicron en Brasil ocurre diez días después de que se hubiera declarado la transmisión comunitaria en la ciudad.
Pese a que la vacunación ayuda en la mayoría de los casos a prevenir el agravamiento de los casos, a evitar hospitalizaciones y a disminuir los riesgos de muerte por la enfermedad y sus variantes, los expertos han señalado reiteradamente que la inmunización contra la covid-19 no garantiza el contagio o recontagio del virus.
Con casi 620 mil víctimas fatales y unos 22,3 millones de contagios, Brasil es el segundo país con mayor número de muertos por el virus, después de Estados Unidos, y el tercero en cantidad de positivos, detrás del país norteamericano e India.
Hasta el momento, el gigante suramericano acumula 265 casos confirmados por la nueva variante y 520 más en fase de análisis, según las cifras del Ministerio de Salud, que se consideran desfasadas debido a que estudios indican que el 92,6 % de los positivos por COVID-19 analizados en el país son causados por la ómicron.
