El alto representante de la Unión Europea (UE) para Asuntos Exteriores, Josep Borrell, ha trasladado al ministro de Exteriores ucraniano, Dmitro Kuleba, la voluntad de la UE de «actuar» en caso de «una mayor agresión rusa«.
«Hablé con Kuleba anoche sobre los últimos acontecimientos con respecto a la situación de seguridad actual. La UE y sus socios están unidos en el apoyo a Ucrania. Seremos resueltos y decisivos al actuar en caso de una mayor agresión rusa», dijo Borrell a través de su cuenta en Twitter.
«Permanecemos juntos», añadió el jefe de la diplomacia europea.
En las últimas horas se han multiplicado los contactos entre los representantes de la Unión Europea y sus socios para abordar la creciente tensión entre Rusia y Ucrania.
La UE y Estados Unidos están coordinando los preparativos para un paquete de sanciones «sólido y completo«, que se aplicaría «con rapidez» en caso de una agresión militar por parte de Rusia, indicó la Comisión Europea este sábado.
El tema fue abordado en una conversación el viernes por la noche entre el jefe de gabinete de la Presidenta de la Comisión Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, Bjoern Seibert y la vicesecretaria de Estado de EEUU, Wendy Sherman, y en una videoconferencia con el asesor de seguridad nacional de la Casa Blanca, Jake Sullivan.
Discutieron en particular «los pasos tomados por la UE y EE.UU. para alentar a Rusia a priorizar la desescalada, elegir el camino de la diplomacia y abstenerse de todas las hostilidades».
Además, reiteraron que «cualquier nueva agresión rusa contra Ucrania tendría consecuencias masivas y duros costes» para Rusia.
Por otra parte, en la videoconferencia con Sullivan, aparte de la coordinación de los preparativos sobre sanciones, se abordaron los «pasos concretos para apoyar la economía ucraniana» y las acciones que se adoptarán «para prepararse para cualquier interrupción futura del suministro de energía a Europa».
El viernes la UE informó de que ha decidido permitir al personal «no esencial» de su representación diplomática en Kiev salir de Ucrania en el contexto de la tensión generada por la acumulación de tropas rusas junto a la frontera de ese país.
