El presidente Joe Biden restableció el lunes la prohibición de entrada al país de personas de Brasil, Irlanda, Reino Unido y otros 26 países europeos a fin de evitar la propagación del coronavirus.
La secretaria de prensa de la Casa Blanca Jen Psaki indicó que Sudáfrica fue agregada a la lista debido a la presencia en ese país de una variante de la enfermedad.
“No es este el momento de levantar las restricciones a los viajes internacionales”, señaló Psaki.
La medida de Biden prohíbe, a partir del martes, la entrada al país a prácticamente todos los ciudadanos extranjeros que hayan estado en alguno de los países señalados en los 14 días previos a su llegada a Estados Unidos.
Los 26 países europeos señalados son parte de la zona Schengen de libre paso e incluyen a Austria, Bélgica, República Checa, Dinamarca, Estonia, Finlandia, Francia, Alemania, Grecia, Hungría, Islandia, Italia, Letonia, Liechtenstein, Lituania, Luxemburgo, Malta, Holanda, Noruega, Polonia, Portugal, Eslovaquia, Eslovenia, España, Suecia y Suiza.
Por su parte, el máximo experto en enfermedades contagiosas de Estados Unidos, el doctor Anthony Fauci dijo el lunes que la decisión de Biden era “prudente”.
“Estamos preocupados por la mutación del virus que se ha detectado en Sudáfrica”, expresó Fauci en entrevista con el programa “CBS This Morning”.
“Estamos examinándola detenidamente. Obviamente es una variante diferente, más nociva que la detectada en Reino Unido y creo que es prudente restringirle la entrada al país de personas que no son ciudadanos”, añadió.
La medida es en efecto una anulación de una orden emitida por Donald Trump en sus últimos días como presidente. La orden de Trump coincidió con instrucciones del Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de prohibir la entrada a toda persona procedente del exterior a menos que mostraran una prueba negativa al COVID-19 hecha en los tres días previos de abordar el vuelo.
La revocación de la medida ya se había anunciado por parte de allegados de Biden, pero la adición de Sudáfrica a la lista reveló la consternación en el gobierno de cara a la mutación del virus.
La variante sudafricana no ha sido detectada en Estados Unidos, pero la británica sí ha sido vista en varios estados del país.
Fauci dijo que hay una “leve disminución” en la eficacia de la vacuna sobre las nuevas variantes, pero que “las vacunas que tenemos son lo suficientemente eficaces tanto para la variante británica como para la variante sudafricana”.
Aun así, advirtió que existe la posibilidad de nuevas mutaciones, y que los expertos están desarrollando antídotos para aplicarlos en caso de necesidad.
“Necesitamos empezar a prepararnos, y ya lo estamos haciendo, para actualizar las vacunas si eso se hace necesario”, declaró Fauci.
“Estamos tomando pasos en esa dirección a pesar de que las vacunas que tenemos actualmente sí funcionan”, indicó.
