El presidente del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, Mauricio Claver-Carone, anunció este jueves un fondo de 20 millones de dólares para el desarrollo sustentable de la región amazónica latinoamericana.
En el marco de la Asamblea del BID, durante el Foro de Desarrollo Sostenible de la Región Amazónica, el directivo del organismo señaló que “la Amazonía es el corazón verde de América Latina y del mundo«, por lo que «una Amazonía saludable que aprovecha su capital natural es un motor de desarrollo para los pueblos más vulnerables”.
En este sentido, recordó desde Barranquilla, sede del evento, que los países amazónicos pidieron el año pasado al BID que liderara una iniciativa sostenible para beneficiar a las comunidades de la región, “y hoy anticipo que el BID está dispuesto a abrir un fondo de 20 millones de dólares como capital semilla para esta iniciativa”.
La cual, añadió, “enfocaremos en cuatro áreas: bioeconomía, gestión sostenible en agricultura, ganadería y capital humano, ciudades e infraestructura sostenible”.
Por su parte, el presidente de Brasil, Jair Bolsonaro, celebró “la prioridad del fomento a la bioeconomía”, reiteró el “compromiso de Brasil” con esta región y aclaró que el fondo anunciado por Claver-Carone “actuará respetando los intereses soberanos de cada país”.
Puso de presente el mandatario que no se puede pasar por alto la capacidad de inversión del sector privado para estos proyectos y se mostró optimista por “la interacción con el BID, que podrá dar lugar a proyectos de gran alcance, hay proyectos acumulados de décadas, estamos comprometidos con el desarrollo sostenible y el lanzamiento del fondo del BID es una oportunidad para que nuestros países se unan por una causa noble”.
Finalmente, el presidente Iván Duque expuso desde la Asamblea del BID que “el cuidado de la Amazonía, el aprovechamiento debido de su riqueza, es fundamental para nuestro presente y para nuestro futuro y lo pongo en el marco de la mayor amenaza del mundo hoy, que es el cambio climático”.
Destacó el jefe de Estado que desde la suscripción del Pacto de Leticia, en septiembre de 2019, “contamos con el respaldo del BID, pero hoy con la creación del fondo de 20 millones de dólares es el salto más grande que se da”.
Reiteró la intención de presentar al Congreso una ley que endurezca las sanciones penales contra quienes atenten contra el patrimonio natural del país y de la Amazonía: “Endurecer los tipos penales por la deforestación y hacer extinción de dominio de los bienes de los malhechores detrás de esto”.
Y resaltó el mandatario la ocasión al advertir que esta era “la primera vez que llega una discusión sobre la Amazonía a una asamblea del BID”.
