Deambulando entre el barro y la ceniza gris, los habitantes de los pueblos situados al pie del volcán Semeru, en Indonesia, intentaban este domingo recuperar los escasos bienes que les han quedado tras la erupción.
Padres con sus hijas traumatizadas, viejos con colchones a cuestas. Agricultores con sus cabras en brazos, vivas de milagro. Tras la apocalíptica erupción de la víspera, todos están conmocionados y yerran de un lado a otro, en medio de una aldea reducida a la nada.
«De golpe, el cielo se oscureció y luego llegaron la lluvia y los nubarrones ardientes», cuenta Bunadi, un habitante de la aldea de Kampung Renteng, en el este de Java, que afirma que se vio sorprendido por la irrupción de un «barro ardiente».
La potente erupción ha causado más de una decena de muertos y numerosos heridos.
Las cabañas que componen el pueblo se vieron arrasadas por las coladas de lodo ardiente y una lluvia de cenizas y escombros, obligando a centenares de familias a huir de la zona sin poder llevarse nada consigo. Muchos de ellos han perdido sus casas.
Refugiadas en una mezquita, varias madres esperan sentadas en el suelo, junto a sus hijos, dormidos. Tuvieron suerte y pudieron escapar al cataclismo que enterró aldeas enteras bajo las cenizas.
Las operaciones de rescate continúan pero los habitantes, desesperados, se arriesgan a volver a sus aldeas, pese al riesgo que esto entraña para su salud, con la idea de recuperar cualquier cosa que se haya podido salvar.
En una casa de Lumajang, los platos, cazuelas y boles esperan en una mesa, como si la cena estuviera a punto de ser servida. Pero en lugar de comida, lo que hay es ceniza volcánica.
Arrastrados por el lodo
Algunos lugareños cuentan a sus familiares desaparecidos. «El torrente de lodo se llevó a diez personas», cuenta Salim, otro habitante de Kampung Renteng. «Uno de ellos pudo haber escapado. Le gritamos que corriera, pero contestó: ‘no quiero, ¿quién dará de comer a mis vacas?'», explica Salim.
No muy lejos de allí, en Sumber Wuluh, los tejados de las casas apenas sobresalen del suelo, lo cual da una idea del volumen de lodo que inundó el pueblo en muy poco tiempo.
Hay vacas muertas yaciendo en el suelo y, aunque algunos animales han logrado sobrevivir, muchos están mutilados, en carne viva, abrasados por la lava.
Un evacuado, con un cigarrillo entre los labios, fue rescatado por los socorristas, cuyo uniforme naranja destaca en un paisaje gris oscuro que casi parece el infierno.
Sentados sobre la ceniza, un grupo de vecinos de Sumber Wuluh contemplan el cráter del Semeru, de donde sigue emanando humo.
En medio de los árboles quemados y deshojados y de las casas y vehículos enterrados por el barro, ellos son, junto con los pocos animales que los rodean, los únicos signos de vida en un panorama de muerte y desolación.
