Las autoridades electorales peruanas finalmente confirmaron la victoria del candidato izquierdista Pedro Castillo y lo proclamaron como el presidente de Perú, luego de una tensa espera de más de un mes que mantuvo al país al borde de una nueva crisis política desde que se realizó la segunda vuelta electoral, el pasado 6 de junio.
Después de que pasaron dos semanas de celebrarse los comicios, se conocieron los resultados oficiales, no determinantes para hablar de un ganador. La Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales (ONPE), con el 100 % de las actas escrutadas, ubicó a Castillo en el primer lugar con el 50,125 % de los votos, frente al 49,875 % obtenido por Keiko Fujimori. La diferencia entre ambos apenas fue de 44 mil votos.
Las elecciones se realizaron en medio de una intensa polarización política, luego de un convulso período de cuatro años, que estuvo marcado por la renuncia del mandatario Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, la destitución de su sucesor, Martín Vizcarra, el breve período presidencial de Manuel Merino —que dejó el cargo presionado por las protestas populares—, y la actual gestión de Francisco Sagasti, que deberá entregar el mando a Castillo.
Aunque las cifras de la ONPE fueron tomadas como un triunfo del profesor izquierdista, quien contó con el determinante apoyo de las zonas rurales y empobrecidas de Perú ubicadas en el sur del país, su llegada a la Casa de Gobierno, sede del poder, aún estaba flanqueada por una serie de obstáculos que tuvieron que ser despejados por el Poder Electoral.
