Dijo que se sintió obligada a hablar por la desesperación que observó. Lo que contó refrenda mayormente lo que declararon a la Associated Press activistas que visitaron el albergue hace poco.
Las condiciones generan alarmas acerca de porqué toma más de un mes, término promedio, entregar a un menor cuando la mayoría tienen familiares en Estados Unidos. Hasta el 31 de mayo, casi 9.000 menores habían pasado por instalaciones sin licencia y 7.200 por albergues con licencia, de acuerdo con documentos legales del gobierno. La voluntaria fue una de más de 700 que trabajaron en el lugar cuando Fort Bliss albergó a más de 4.600 menores en carpas militares con aire acondicionado, llenas de catres militares. Actualmente hay casi la mitad de menores, menos de 2.500.
La voluntaria dijo que conoció chicos que llevaban 54 días allí. Vio niñas joviales que se tornaban irritables y dormían tanto que había que despertarlas para que comiesen.
Varios menores tuvieron ataques de pánico tras ver que sus amigos se iban para unirse a sus familias. Un día hubo que llamar ambulancias cuatro veces por esta razón, según la voluntaria.
“Los paramédicos venían a la carpa y se los llevaban en camilla porque tenían los puños cerrados con fuerza. Las cabezas a veces se inclinaban hacia un lado y temblaban. Era obvio que era algo que no controlaban”, expresó.
Los niños podían llamar a sus familias dos veces por semana.
Un funcionario del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos no comentó específicamente la afirmación de que hay ataques de pánico y otras inquietudes acerca de la salud de los menores, pero dijo que el gobierno se afanaba por aumentar el espacio para que los niños se entretengan, la ayuda terapéutica y los servicios educativos, así como otras actividades que puedan contribuir al bienestar de los chicos. Agregó que en todas las instalaciones de emergencia hay servicios psicológicos y consejeros.
La cantidad récord de migrantes menores de edad puso a prueba al gobierno de Biden. Entre febrero y mayo las autoridades se hicieron cargo de casi 60.000 menores que cruzaron la frontera sin sus padres.
El objetivo del gobierno es que los menores se reúnan con sus padres o patrocinadores lo más rápidamente posible, pero este proceso toma tiempo y requiere entrevistas, revisión de antecedentes y, a veces, visitas domiciliarias, según el funcionario.
El gobierno dijo que respetó las normas vigentes cuando habilitó 14 sitios de emergencia para albergar menores, luego de que las instalaciones del Servicio de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza se viesen desbordadas. Agregó que constantemente se mejoran las condiciones de esos albergues.
Por ejemplo, se añadió personal para manejar en forma virtual cada caso, resolver casos complicados y para decidir qué hacer con menores que no tienen parientes ni patrocinadores.
La cantidad de menores en los albergues bajó del pico de 23.000 a 16.000. Cuatro albergues de emergencia cerraron sus puertas y dos más lo harán pronto.
Abogados y activistas sostienen que el albergue de Fort Bliss debería cerrar lo antes posible.
Los activistas aseguran que hay opciones mejores que no están siendo usadas, como el centro de convenciones de Long Beach, California, donde los abogados de inmigración se reúnen regularmente con los menores y se invita a músicos e instructores de yoga.
Una instalación de Pomona, California, alberga unos 500 chicos, pero tiene espacio para más de 2.000.
