Alex Saab, una de las personas más defendidas por el gobierno de Venezuela, fue un informante de la DEA y proporcionó a los investigadores estadounidenses datos sobre los presuntos esquemas de corrupción que montó junto al entorno del presidente Nicolás Maduro.
El proceso está detallado en un documento revelado este miércoles en el proceso judicial que enfrenta en EEUU. A continuación, un detalle del proceso que lo llevó a convertirse en colaborador de la agencia norteamericana, según detalla Infobae.

La historia se remonta a hace más de cinco años, cuando Saab Morán, que estaba bajo la mira de los investigadores, se reunió con agentes especiales de la DEA y el FBI en Bogotá. En las reuniones, el empresario dio información relacionada con algunas de sus empresas que tenían contratos con el gobierno venezolano para un plan de viviendas sociales, y detalló la forma en que recibía los pagos, con el flujo de dinero.

Un abogado estadounidense le entregó a Saab un borrador de propuesta en la que se admite que el empresario habría pagado sobornos a funcionarios del Gobierno de Maduro. En informes posteriores, Saab admitió haber hecho los pagos ilegales vinculados a contratos que ganó un plan de entrega de alimentos.

Se firma el acuerdo formal y Saab se convierte en colaborador. Saab aceptó ser una fuente activa de la DEA e inició el vínculo con los agentes, comunicándose por teléfono, mensajes de texto y de voz. Según afirma el documento judicial, Saab realizó “una cooperación proactiva”.
En el marco de este acuerdo, aceptó devolver ganancias obtenidas de actividades ilícitas, junto al también acusado Álvaro Pulido Vargas, alias “Germán Enrique Rubio Salas”.

Comienzan las transacciones de devolución de dinero de los sobornos. Saab realizó una transferencia electrónica de USD 3.255.593,90 desde una cuenta que él controlaba a una cuenta bancaria controlada por la DEA.

Saab realizó otra transferencia electrónica, por un monto ligeramente superior (USD 3.313.757,69) a una cuenta controlada por la DEA.

El empresario, representado por su abogado estadounidense, se reunió con agentes de la DEA y fiscales de la Oficina del Fiscal de los Estados Unidos y del Departamento de Justicia en Europa en un lugar no detallado. Allí, Saab recibió una fecha límite para entregarse a la Justicia de Florida. Según le advirtieron, si no se entregaba antes del 30 de mayo de 2019, ya no seguiría siendo una fuente colaboradora y sería acusado penalmente en el Distrito Sur de Florida.

Saab fue procesado en este caso en el Distrito Sur de Florida.
Desde entonces, el empresario sabía que no podía tocar suelo estadounidense. Pero fue detenido en Cabo Verde a raíz de una orden de captura internacional, y fue extraditado a EEUU en octubre.
El empresario enfrenta en una corte de Miami un cargo de conspiración para cometer lavado de dinero, del que se declaró “no culpable” el pasado 15 de noviembre ante la jueza Alicia M. Otazo-Reyes.
Saab enfrenta una condena de unos 20 años si es hallado culpable del único cargo que tiene en la corte de Miami, pena que puede ser reducida si hace un trato con la Fiscalía, que suele incluir delación de otras personas.
Estados Unidos describe a Saab como el principal conducto para la corrupción en Venezuela, alguien que cosechó enormes ganancias inesperadas de contratos dudosos para importar alimentos mientras millones de personas en la nación sudamericana pasaban hambre. El gobierno de Maduro lo considera un diplomático que fue secuestrado mientras cumplía una misión humanitaria que se hizo más urgente por las sanciones de Estados Unidos.
