La N.1 del mundo, Ashleigh Barty, conquistó este sábado su primer Abierto de Australia al derrotar en la final a la estadounidense Danielle Collins (30ª) 6-3, 7-6 (7/2).
La australiana de 25 años logra así su tercer título de Grand Slam después de Roland Garros en 2019 y Wimbledon en 2021.
Barty se llevó la final sin realizar su mejor tenis, y lejos del dominio que mostró en sus seis anteriores partidos en este primer Grand Slam del año.
En el primer set salvó la única bola de break que concedió y no falló en la única que se presentó a su favor.
Trascurridos 32 minutos ya tenía la mitad del trabajo hecho.
Pero bajó sus prestaciones al inicio del segundo set. Cedió en dos ocasiones su servicio en un solo set, el doble del número de juegos cedidos al servicio en los seis primeros partidos (un break ante Anisimova en octavos).
Dominada 5-1 y cometiendo un número inesperado de errores no forzados y de dobles faltas, logró recuperarse para ponerse 5-5.
Collins logró llevar el partido al tie-break, pero Barty se mostró superior, disponiendo de cuatro bolas de partido y aprovechando la primera de ellas para asegurarse el título.
Barty participaba en su 9º Abierto de Australia, un torneo en el que nunca había pasado de semifinales (2020).
En su camino al título ha dejado en la cuneta a cuatro tenistas estadounidenses en sus cuatro últimos partidos: Amanda Anisimova en octavos, Jessica Pegula en cuartos, Madison Keys en semifinales, y Collins en la final.
Cuando cosechó su primer ‘Grande’ en 2019 en Roland Garros, la australiana había derrotado a las cuatro mismas jugadoras: Pegula en primera ronda, Collins en segunda, Keys en cuartos y Anisimova en semifinales.
De paso se convirtió en la única jugadora en activo junto a Serena Williams en haber ganado torneos de Grand Slam en todas las superficies (duro, hierba y tierra batida).
Es también la primera australiana en conquistar el título en Melbourne después de Chris O’Neill en 1978.
