El gobierno argentino concedió asilo diplomático a la exministra de Obras Públicas de Ecuador María de los Ángeles Duarte, refugiada desde agosto de 2020 en la embajada argentina en Quito, informaron este viernes fuentes oficiales.
La decisión fue notificada el jueves por la tarde a la Embajada de Ecuador en Buenos Aires, precisaron las fuentes a la AFP.
La medida se adoptó en base a la Convención sobre Asilo Diplomático de 1954 y a la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos, según se citó.
Duarte está alojada en la sede diplomática argentina en Quito desde el 12 de agosto de 2020 junto a su hijo menor de edad cuyo padre es de nacionalidad argentina.
Las fuentes consultadas indicaron que el 12 de diciembre se acordó la realización de una reunión jurídico técnica entre representantes de ambas Cancillerías para abordar el tema.
«La reunión va a ser en Quito para consensuar estrategias respecto a la causa. Ambas partes se sentarán a dialogar», explicó una fuente de la cancillería argentina.
María de los Ángeles Duarte, que integró el gabinete del exmandatario de izquierda Rafael Correa (2007-2017), fue condenada a ocho años de prisión en un caso de corrupción.
La exfuncionaria alega en su defensa que el suyo es un caso de persecución política, el mismo argumento del propio Correa, quien recibió refugio en Bélgica en abril de este año.
Correa, que reside en Bélgica desde que dejó el gobierno, fue juzgado en ausencia en Ecuador y condenado a 8 años de prisión por corrupción.
