El veterano salsero puertorriqueño Andy Montañez, con más de 50 años de carrera, celebrará “su vida y legado musical” el próximo 4 de septiembre en un concierto que lleva por título su mote de artista, “El Niño de Trastalleres”.
Montañez, uno de los íconos del género tropical del mundo, hará un recorrido por toda su trayectoria musical haciéndole así honor a su mote en la Sala de Festivales Antonio Paoli del Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré, en San Juan.
“Es momento de celebrar la vida, especialmente luego de los tiempos tan difíciles que nos han tocado en los últimos años. Nos merecemos un rato de esparcimiento gozando los éxitos que han sido del agrado de toda mi gente y de una vez reconocer de donde vengo, de Trastalleres”, dijo Montañez en un comunicado de prensa.
Trastalleres es un sector del distrito sanjuanero de Santurce, con fuerte acento cultural y musical.
“Es un sueño hecho realidad para cualquier artista, seguir trabajando en lo que uno ama contando con el respaldo del público. Me siento honrado con ese amor que me dispensa Puerto Rico. Siento que soy profeta en mi tierra”, agregó.
La pasión de Montañez por el canto la heredó de su padre, Andrés Montañez, amante de los tangos y los boleros.
A los ocho años ganó un concurso de aficionados en el teatro de la estación de radio WKAQ en el que su madre, Celina Rodríguez, lo inscribió.
La primera participación formal de Montañez fue a los 16 años de edad como segunda voz del trío Los Duendes, junto a varios de sus amigos del barrio.
A los 19 años y mientras estudiaba en una escuela vocacional de la capital, tuvo su primera actuación profesional en la orquesta de Luis Morales, con quien cantó boleros en el club El Esquife en San Juan, y en la que permaneció por cinco meses.
Luego, en 1962, tras la ruptura de El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, su fundador y director, Rafael Ithier, junto a Sammy Ayala, fueron a Trastalleres en búsqueda de Montañez para convencerlo de que se uniera al grupo.
Tras quince años en la agrupación y 37 producciones, Montañez decidió abandonar el grupo, pero no sin antes dejar canciones inolvidables como “El barbero loco”, “Julia”, “Guaguancó de El Gran Combo”, “Un verano en Nueva York”, “Vagabundo”, “Milonga sentimental”, “Las hojas blancas”, “La soledad” y “A mi manera”.
Montañez decidió abandonar “El Combo” cuando le propusieron un contrato de 100 mil dólares anuales, la disposición de una residencia y un automóvil para que sustituyera al cantante venezolano Oscar D’León en la orquesta Dimensión Latina, en la que estuvo tres años.
Con la Dimensión Latina grabó ocho discos, colocando a la agrupación en los primeros lugares de popularidad y ventas.
Posteriormente, Montañez grabó con la agrupación Puerto Rico All Stars tres álbumes, destacándose con temas como “Reunión en la cima” e “Isla bonita”.
