“Esta es una llamada de atención para la comunidad internacional y para las autoridades haitianas que han contemplado la impunidad crónica e ignorado los llamados de alerta emitidos por las personas que defienden los derechos humanos que han pavimentado el camino para una crisis tan grave”, apuntó.
AI está preocupada “por la posible escalada de violencia en los próximos días” y seguirá de cerca las posibles protestas que se produzcan.
Además, pidió a las autoridades haitianas que sitúen los derechos humanos en el centro de su respuesta a la crisis política.
“La comunidad internacional también debe proporcionar toda la asistencia al país para encontrar formas de desescalar la violencia y proteger los derechos humanos, incluidos los de personas periodistas y defensoras de los derechos humanos”, agregó.
Según el documentó la ONG, las protestas y la violencia generalizada han sido constantes en Haití desde al menos 2019.
Además, un informe de la ONU publicado en enero de 2021 constató un marcado aumento de las violaciones de los derechos humanos y de los abusos contra el derecho a la vida durante las protestas de 2018 y 2019, y pidió a las autoridades que abordaran problemas subyacentes como la impunidad.
