América comenzó el año con más de 102 millones de casos de coronavirus y 2,4 millones de muertos por la enfermedad, en un momento en el que la variante ómicron toma fuerza en el continente al hacer presencia en 18 territorios.
En general, la covd-19 deja hasta este lunes 102.287.397 personas contagiadas y 2.404.354 fallecidas en el continente, según la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS).
Además, datos de la alemana Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) señalan que ya hay presencia de ómicron en Estados Unidos, Canadá, México, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Chile, Argentina, Brasil y Venezuela.
También, se han detectados positivos en la Guayana Francesa, Puerto Rico, Trinidad y Tobago, San Cristóbal y Nieves, Martinica y San Vicente y Las Granadinas.
De regreso a los cierres por la COVID-19
Estados Unidos, el país más afectado del mundo por el virus, ha visto en el comienzo del año estropeada su intención de regresar a la normalidad.
Solo en la capital económica del país, Nueva York, se presentan niveles récord de contagios (85.000 el pasado sábado) y un claro aumento de las hospitalizaciones (9.500 este lunes), por encima del «pico invernal» de 2021.
Lo anterior hizo que muchas empresas esta semana regresaran al teletrabajo, una fórmula que poco a poco habían abandonado durante 2021 y que esperaban desterrar en 2022.
Entre las que dijeron «no» a la vuelta a la oficina en el arranque del año figuran Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America y Wells Fargo.
Otro drama se vive en la aviación, un sector en el que la combinación del temporal de viento y nieve más la expansión del coronavirus llevó a que este lunes de los 4.347 vuelos cancelados a nivel mundial, 2.790 tuvieran como origen o destino aeropuertos estadounidenses.
También, el musical «Mrs. Doubtfire», de Broadway, anunció que parará durante nueve semanas por la oleada del virus, que ya ha provocado numerosas suspensiones temporales y cierres prematuros de otros musicales en la meca del teatro.
Otra noticia tiene que ver con el secretario de Defensa de Estados Unidos, Lloyd Austin, quien reveló a última hora del domingo que dio positivo para covid-19 en un test que se hizo tras presentar síntomas mientras se encontraba de vacaciones navideñas en su casa.
Miedo en el mar
Poco alentador es igualmente lo que ocurre en Brasil con el aumento de la COVID-19.
Allí, los cinco navíos de crucero que están operando actualmente en el litoral brasileño han registrado casos entre sus tripulantes y pasajeros, y a tres ya se les impusieron nuevas restricciones sanitarias, informó la Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria (Anvisa).
De los tres a los que se le impusieron restricciones, dos fueron declarados en nivel 4 de gravedad epidemiológica, es decir cuando ya se constató que la transmisión a bordo es comunitaria y elevada, por lo que tienen que suspender operaciones, y el tercero en nivel 3, en el que hay contagios y transmisión pero no a niveles preocupantes.
Los dos cruceros en nivel 4, el MSC Esplendida y el Costa Diadema, fueron obligados a interrumpir sus trayectos, colocar en cuarentena a todos los tripulantes y pasajeros, y a regresar a los puertos de los que zarparon para iniciar un desembarque en la medida de lo posible.
Hasta el momento la pandemia deja en el gigante suramericano 620.000 muertos y 22,3 millones de casos.
Testeos al llegar a Argentina
Otro país que volvió a tomar medidas para evitar la propagación de la enfermedad fue Argentina, en donde tanto sus ciudadanos como los extranjeros que arriben al país vía aérea, fluvial o marítima deberán realizarse testeosdebido al incremento de la variante ómicron.
«A partir de la proliferación de ómicron, una variante con riesgo aumentado de transmisión y reinfección comparado con las que circularon previamente, es requisito de ingreso a la Argentina realizar un test diagnóstico», dijo el Ministerio de Salud.
Aquellos que no estén testeados no podrán concurrir a eventos masivos ni a reuniones sociales en espacios cerrados.
La decisión se fundamentó en el aumento de casos que ha sufrido el país suramericano que a fines de diciembre superó la barrera de los 50.000 contagios.
Entre los afectados por la enfermedad está el capitán de la selección Argentina y delantero del París Saint-Germain (PSG), Lionel Messi, quien tras dar positivo se mantiene en aislamiento en su país natal y a la espera de un resultado negativo que le permita regresar a Francia.
El astro del fútbol llegó a la Ciudad de Rosario el 23 de diciembre para pasar las fiestas junto a su familia y sus amigos, con quienes asistió a una fiesta privada cuyas imágenes se hicieron virales.
Aumetno de cifreas en México y Ecuador
El presidente de México, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reconoció el aumento de contagios de covid-19 en el país por ómicron, pero resaltó que esta es menos dañina y menos mortal.
«Sí, están incrementándose los contagios por esta nueva variante, pero afortunadamente no hay incremento en las hospitalizaciones y, lo más importante, no hay fallecimientos», precisó el mandatario.México detectó a la primera persona contagiada con ómicron el 3 de diciembre y desde entonces suman más de 40 casos.
En general, el país se acerca a los 4 millones de contagios y suma 299 mil 544 muertes debido a la COVID-19.
Del mismo modo, se dio a conocer que Ecuador reducirá desde este martes el aforo en las instituciones públicas al 50 % para tratar de frenar los contagios.
Al respecto, la ministra de Salud, Ximena Garzón, comentó que se ha registrado «un aumento semanal de 9.676 casos de covid, sobre todo en las provincias de Guayas, Pichincha, Manabí, Pastaza, Tungurahua».
Ecuador tuvo este domingo 704 nuevos contagios y acumuló 552 mil 324 casos en la pandemia.
La cifra de muertos confirmados con coronavirus ascendió a 23 mil 855, a los que se sumaron nueve mil 828 «fallecidos probables», para un total de 33 mil 683 defunciones.
