Alemania prohíbe los plásticos de un solo uso

Alemania prohíbe desde este sábado la venta de plásticos de un solo uso como platos, vasos o bastoncillos, en aplicación de una directiva europea que busca proteger de contaminación los océanos.

La nueva ley, aprobada en septiembre de 2020 y que ahora entra en vigor, prohíbe los «bastoncillos, cubiertos, platos, pajillas, palos para globos y vasos», además de embalajes en poliestireno usados para envasar alimentos.

El texto aplica una directiva europea aprobada en 2018 tras meses de negociaciones entre los países de la Unión Europea que terminó prohibiendo una docena de categorías de plásticos.

Según la Comisión Europea, los productos incluidos representan un 70% de los residuos vertidos al mar y las playas.

En Alemania se permitirá la venta de las existencias preexistentes más allá de 2021, así como la comercialización de aquellos productos para los que no hay todavía alternativa como toallitas, tampones higiénicos o cigarrillos con filtros de plástico.

No obstante, estos deberán ir etiquetados con un aviso del daño ambiental causado por el plástico.

La ley alemana estipula que la administración privilegiará en los concursos públicos la adquisición de «productos fabricados a partir de materiales reciclados».

La crisis sanitaria hizo que la producción mundial de plástico retrocediera en 2020, de 368 millones de toneladas en 2019 a 367 millones (-0,3%), según la asociación europea de productores de plástico.

Desde el inicio de la era industrial, la producción solo había disminuido en 1973, con la crisis del petróleo, y en 2008, en el estallido de la crisis financiera.

Aun así, la asociación de protección de la fauna WWF advierte que la producción mundial de desechos de plástico podría aumentar en un 41% hasta 2030 y duplicar la cantidad de residuos en los océanos hasta los 300 millones de toneladas.AFP
