Uruguay acogió al boxeador venezolano Eldric Sella, quien participó en la delegación de refugiados de los Juegos Olímpicos Tokio 2020 y que no puede volver a Trinidad y Tobago, donde residía, debido a que no tiene su pasaporte vigente, informaron este martes la oposición de Venezuela y el deportista.
La noticia fue confirmada por el boxeador a través de su cuenta de Instagram, donde agradeció a Uruguay por abrirle las puertas.
«Hoy tengo la bendición de empezar de nuevo en este país que sin pensarlo dos veces me abrió las puertas y me entregó la llaves para que haga de este mi nuevo hogar», indicó Sella.
David Smolansky agradeció también a la oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (Acnur) por «interceder» en el caso de Sella.
Según denunció en julio pasado el padre del deportista, Edward Sella, Acnur se encontraba «buscando un país que reciba» a su hijo, debido a que Trinidad y Tobago, donde residía desde 2018, se negaba a otorgarle una visa por el vencimiento de su pasaporte.
Eldric Sella, de 24 años, fue uno de los 29 atletas refugiados que participaron en los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020.
El canciller de Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, acusó a Acnur de «utilizar ideológicamente», en contra del país caribeño, a Sella.
«Puede volver a casa cuando quiera. Migró a Trinidad y no le podía ser otorgado un estatus para el que no aplica. Acnur lo utilizó ideológicamente contra Venezuela», dijo Arreaza, quien también acusó a la oficina de la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) de actuar por intereses políticos y «sin rigor».
