Un venezolano murió la madrugada de este miércoles mientras cruzaba a pie la abrupta frontera entre Chile y Bolivia por un paso no habilitado, según confirmó a EFE la Policía de Investigaciones (PDI).
El migrante fue identificado como Domingo Jesús Vivas González, de 51 años, y estaba acompañado por su esposa y su hijo de 10 años, según medios locales, que apuntan al frío y a la fatiga como las principales causas de su muerte.
Pese a las extremas temperaturas y a la pandemia de la COVID-19, el paso fronterizo entre la pequeña localidad de Colchane (Chile) y Pisiga (Bolivia), en una zona andina a más de tres mil 600 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar, se convirtió en los últimos meses en ruta para que extranjeros lleguen a Chile de manera irregular.
La entrada en menos de siete días en febrero de más de un millar de extranjeros, principalmente venezolanos, provocó desabastecimientos y enfrentamientos, además del colapso del sistema sanitario, que obligó a instalar campamentos de cuarentena preventiva para los migrantes.
En Colchane, una de las 10 localidades más pobres de Chile, ya han muerto al menos cuatro migrantes.
